Aly stood in front of the class looking thoughtful as they came in.

"Over the past five classes, we've talked a lot about different ways to get information," she said. "But we've never talked about what to do once you have the information. In general, that's not the spy's job. The spy simply retrieves the information and passes it up the chain of command. It's the spymaster or the officer or the politician's job. But things are rarely that easy, and none of you are actually spies." She grinned. "That I know of."

"So how do you know when to act? How do you know when to act wisely? When the goal is revolution, the object should only rarely be to just taunt the person in power or draw his attention to you. You need a plan. You need a clear objective, and you need to make sure you have as much information as possible before you act."

She raised an eyebrow. "So take...oh, whatever possibility you wish to discuss and form a plan of action. Decide what information you need, and how - using the techniques we've talked about - you'd go about getting it."

"No, you don't!"

"Yes, I do!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"I'm not talking about this with you if you're going to act like this," Aravis snapped. "If you can't stop for one second to think about how hard this is on me without getting into some stupid, childish fight about it."

As an afterthought, she added, "Do not," under her breath.

She didn't like losing.

"You think you getting hurt is somehow easier on me?" Seely snapped back, almost yelling. "Ever think that maybe I don't want someone else I love getting hurt?"

"And how is it supposed to be any easier for me, then, for you to merrily taunt her and call her out like this, practically daring her to hurt you?" Aravis replied, her voice rising slightly in pitch.

"I don't expect it to be easy!" Seely had a pair of lungs on him, oh yes. "But I'd much rather she hurt me than you!"

"And I'd infinitely prefer she hurt neither of us but that's not an option if you insist on provoking her!" Aravis snapped back, keeping her own voice much, much lower.

"You want me to stop, is that it?" Seely asked. "You want me to shut up and play the good little boy? You want her to win?"

"No, I shockingly want you to get out of this with your hand intact along with the rest of you," Aravis replied, narrowing her eyes. "We can win without being utterly moronic and asking for her to pick on us, though."

"You mean like by knocking over teacups?"

"At least I didn't call her a bitch on the radio with my name attached, and I only did that because she'd hurt you and showed no sign of not continuing to do it to people."

And because it had been fun and she'd been mad in her own right, but details.

"And I'm just supposed to ignore the fact she hurt you, and might do it again?"

"If it means you not getting hurt worse, yes. There's no reason she'd go after me right now, is there?"

"You don't know that!" Seely snapped. "The woman is insane, she might just pick your name at random!"

"She doesn't even know it and I wouldn't show up if she just pointed to the class rosters and called me."

"But I thought it didn't matter if you turned up or not?"

Aravis crossed her arms. "I'm not talking about this anymore," she replied. "You're deliberately throwing yourself into harm's way and just expecting me to not care, and if you don't understand why I'm upset, then you don't know me half as well as you like to think you do."

Seely straightened as if he'd been slapped. "Obviously I don't," he gritted out. "I must be too stupid to."

Aravis let a flicker of hurt cross her face before going impassive again, and replied, "Twist the words however you'd like, fine, but that's not what I said."

With that, she turned her attention to her notes, which consisted of...a blank piece of paper.

It was a very, very fascinating piece of paper.

Seely very deliberately got up and moved.

Then spent the rest of the lesson staring at the back of Aravis's head.
