Xander? Bitchily grim as he walks around pointing out various pieces of Very Loud Equipment?

"So yeah, today's job? Test all the equipment. Power drills, saws, cement mixers. Gotta make sure the stuff is still running when we send it all back." It may not make enough noise to bother Umbridge or even get her notice, but every little bit helps, right? Plus if anybody's trying something else, every distraction helps.

He's almost pissed-off enough to forget to tell them to put on proper safety gear while doing it.

"Okay, I take back what I said last night about you not being allowed to, you know, do that."

Bel eyed Anders. "How come?"

Anders jerked his head in Xander's general direction. "Found out what happened to Bridge."

This was said with considerable venom.

"What?" Bel growled, tensing. He should've just fireballed the bitch this morning.

Anders nearly squashed the sandwich he was handing Bel, his hands were shaking and tense with anger. "Some kind of spell that made his breath really hot. Xander says it hurt his throat. Bridge is way too good a guy to deserve anything like that. First Phoebe, now my best friend . . . I'm just glad she can't really do anything to hurt you."

Bel snorted. "She can try," he said. "But she probably knows she can't take me, since she didn't pull anything this morning."

"You went to see her?" demanded Anders, incredulous . . . but with a slow grin creeping across his face. He leaned over to nuzzle Bel lightly. "That's 'cause you're the best, you know."

"Told her if she hurts anyone I care about I'm coming for her," Bel said gruffly.

Anders looked at him for a long moment. "Right now is one of those times when I feel like I should point out that I love you, you know."

"If she hurts you or touches Phoebe again, I'm gonna take her out and I don't care what anyone says," Bel said lowly. "I won't let her get away with it."

Anders managed a brief laugh. "I wouldn't expect you to," he said. Then, more intensely (and with an all-too-conscious knowledge of the clock ticking down), he added, "You're a good man, Bel. Phoebe knows it, and I know it, and we believe in you, and we're damn proud of you. Don't ever let anybody else tell you different, okay?"

"I'm trying to believe it," Bel said, ducking his head. "I've got a lot to make up for."

Anders reached over to put a hand on his shoulder. "You can do it, I know you can. And if you're feeling like you're having a hard time believing it . . . well, I'll believe it for you." He laughed again, softly. "Even from the other side of the country."

Bel leaned in to rest his head against Anders's shoulder. "Thanks," he said. "That means a lot."

Anders was happy to rest his head against Bel's. "You mean a lot. To me, I mean."

"Same here," Bel said. "Which is why I'm not gonna let that bitch hurt you."

Anders grinned and slung an arm around Bel's shoulders. "Who's gonna look after me when you're gone, huh?"

"I'm sure Bridge will keep an eye on you for me," Bel said, trying to ignore the countdown in his head.

"Yeah." Anders exhaled slowly, and very notably didn't let go of Bel. "I should check on him tonight, I think. I haven't seen much of him all summer, and today I think I really should."

Bel nodded. "He okay now?" he asked, resting one hand on Anders's leg. "We can have Phoebe hit the Book of Shadows if we need to despell him."

"Physically, yeah, 's what Xander said." Anders shifted a little bit closer and made a tiny, contented sound, turning to nuzzle at Bel's hair. "He's probably more than a little bit pissed, which . . . anybody making Bridge mad is a frakking crime."

Bel slipped his other hand to the back of Anders's neck, rubbing and playing with his hair. "And I've been hearing other stuff on the radio," he said. "I dunno, I'm not so sure she's human. She seems like a demon to me."

Anders responded by running his fingertips up and down Bel's arm, absently. "I have zero reason to think she's not evil, that's for damn sure. I mean, there's no way in hell she's sane, but I don't think that gets her off the hook."
