Dealing With Stupid People [Tuesday, August 14, 2nd period]

Josh leaned up against a desk in the Danger Shop, hands in his pocket and a grin on his face.

"President Andrew Jackson, in the main foyer of his White House, had a big block of cheese and I can't believe I'm giving this speech," he began. "He did not, sadly, have a cracker the size of Lake Tahoe. I checked. My old boss, the White House Chief of Staff, used this folksy excuse to make us all talk to total crackpots once a year and today that privilege falls to you."

He waved his hands. "Pick a desk, make yourself comfortable, the computer'll drop someone insane off to talk to you. Try not to laugh in their faces--they're all based on real people. Um, sadly."

It wasn't long before someone obliged.

"I say, have you seen Gerald around here?" an older English gentleman asked, walking into her cubicle.

"I do not know anyone named Gerald," Faile said politely.

"How hard can it be to locate the White House butler?" Lord John asked, rolling his eyes. "Honestly. It could drive a man to drink. Speaking of, do you happen to have any Scotch?"

Faile sighed. She was beginning to wonder if she was supposed to feel like the stupid person in this class. "I'm sorry, do not know what Scotch is. If you are asking for alcohol, I'm afraid I don't have any of any kind."

"You don't know what Scotch is? My dear girl, that must be rectified immediately."

He pulled a silver flask from inside his coat. "Take a sip of this. It's 12 year old, single malt, everyday Scotch. I could hardly carry the good stuff around with me all the time. People would think I'm a drunkard!"

Faile accepted the flask and sniffed. It smelled much stronger than what she would drink back home, but not bad. She took a small sip and barely coughed at all. "Thank you," she said, handing the flask back. "That is very nice. It is different from what we have at home, but very good."

"And where's home, darling?" he asked, taking a swig himself with a happy sigh.

"Saldaea in the Borderlands of the Westlands on my world," Faile told him.

She knew this was just an exercise for class with more fake people, but she wondered how someone not associated with Fandom was going to react to that.

"I have been told that, yes," Faile replied.

"Then why do you continue to tell people a fallacy?" he asked.

"Because what is a fallacy for you and many others is not a fallacy for me," Faile explained. "There is no country called Saldaea in this world. And yet, that is where I was born." No, she didn't want to explain it any better. Hopefully she could confuse someone else for once.

Lord John stared at her for a long moment, then reached for his flask again.

"I am intrigued."

"Oh, I think you're as mad as a March hare," he said with a smile, "but I spend a great deal of time around British royalty. If insanity stopped me from hearing a good story, there'd hardly be a point to the cocktail party."
