Accelerated Scouting: Tuesday, Period Five, Week Five

Dale has set up the main campire area to actually be... lots of little campfire areas.

There's also a heap of ~~moddable~~ food and cooking equipment sitting on the picnic tables.

"Today kids we are going to be making ourselves some dinner," Dale said with a grin. "But you are going to have to work for it."

He pointed to the fire rings around them. "You're going to cook over an open fire. A fire that you have to start without any matches, lighters, spells or what not. So come on kids! Let's see what you got!"

"Yes, but not a burned one," River replied. "Catch the sparks?"

Claire had been reaching out to take the stone from Riverto have a trial, but now she frowned, confused.

"What?"

"Stone on metal create sparks. Catch it with a flammable material," River explained.

"Right," Claire said, both relieved and annoyed at herself for making the wrong assumption.

Glancing around, she grabbed one of the twigs and ripped off a stretch of bark, offering that forward to try and catch the sparks.

It took quite a few attempts, but finally a spark landed on the piece of bark and it caught fire, glowing faintly.

"Have to care fot it now. Feed it and protect it."

"That's why we've got this," Claire said, nodding at the twigs she'd set up first.

Sheltering the flane with her hand, and completely mindless of the heat, she brought the bark over a short way and touched it to a few places around the fire.

"See? We're all prepared from the camping trip."

"We are," River agreed, seeming to not pay attention to how close Claire's hand was to the flame. She held the twigs close to the glowing bark, mmaking them catch fire. "Feed it and it grows."

"Yeah, I got the metaphor," Claire said, teasing lightly.

Watching the fire creep up the various sticks, she put the bark down before the flame actually reached her fingers and leans forward to blow on areas and encourage it.

"When do we start cooking?"

River snorted at the teasing, but didn't seem offended. "Once it calms down. Heat but no flame."

"Right."

It made sense, and Claire would be the first to admit River knew more about her than... well, anything. So she sat back and waited.

"How's your week been?"

River added wood to the fire, watching the flames engulf it. "Good," she said. "Gave Irulan a hat. Went to the moon and back and danced on frozen air. You?"

Claire paused for a beat, just for reaction.

"Good," she offered. "Guess it's a but dull, compared to that, though."

"Enjoyed it," River replied, smiling happily.

"How did you get to go?"

"Magic. A friend wanted to surprise me," River replied. "And you made the cheerleader team," she added with a grin.

"I did!" Claire said with a huge grin. "Guess I wasn't as bad as I thought I was, huh?"

"No you weren't," River said with a laugh. "Should be ready for cooking now."

"Right," Claire said, scrambling up. "I'll go get some food, and be back in a sec."

Hardly waiting for confirmation, she headed off to the food tables (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1472400.html?thread=89699728#t89699728) to get food.
