Construction Site: Thursday August 2nd, all day

The "Safety First" signs are still around - in fact, Xander's added one on neon green posterboard. It doesn't have the Mr Harris says part, though.

In the background, the heavy construction guys are putting some of the finishing touches on the supporting walls - it really is looking like a school again, with just smaller room divisions and cosmetic things like... well, doors and windows for a start, for the graduate workers to attend to.

"Today we're hanging doors, guys. Not people named Door though. For the record, in case there's any squirrels listening. Just the kind with hinges and knobs."

Xander noticed, and eventually wandered over ~~possibly after Bridge finished glaring~~. "Hey. I take it your microwave didn't burn down the dorms?"

It took Andrew a moment to remember what Xander was referring to, "Oh! Nope, it was all good. I had, um, actually taken the mug out and, you know, unplugged the microwave, so it was all good."

"How goes the eye training?"

"No seeing through locker room walls yet," Xander answered with a sigh.

"You know," Andrew started, "they make these microscopic cameras now that you can hide virtually..." his voice faltered a little bit, "...anywhere. I, um, I had to do research on spy cameras for Professor Stinson." Andrew winced.

Xander kicked his 16 year old self in the back of the head the second the ooh started rising to his lips, and managed to drown it out with an eww. The voice of maturity, yo. Maybe.

"On one hand, I know somebody who could probably make me one of those. On the other, pretty sure he wouldn't, if I told him what it was for."

Andrew relaxed a little when Xander didn't chastise him for the obvious implications. He wasn't sure why he looked at Xander as an authority figure, but he did.

"So the school is looking really good," he said, smiling. "You guys work fast. And I'm, ah, I'm sorry about running away last time. My head was just in a weird place."

Xander shrugged; that, he had sympathy with. "Been there. You remember Ms. Calendar, the computer science teacher?"

Andrew nodded, hanging his head, "I never had the chance to take her class, but Tucker said she was a pretty awesome teacher."

"When I was here before, when I actually went to the school, she showed up here. Alive again. That was...yeah."

Andrew frowned, "Oh."

He found himself not too sure what to say, and strangely, he didn't just say something random. He reached a hand out towards Xander, but pulled it back.

"I mean it was great," Xander was quick to add, kind of touched by the gesture but doing the awkward guy-dance of *coughIdidn'tseethat*. "Just weird, you know? Plus there's this whole timelines thing with everybody from Sunnydale, so I don't think she was exactly the one I knew."

"Just like I'm not your Andrew!" he exclaimed, a little gleam in his eye. "I could be totally different. Different like Ratman the original series from Ratman Begins." He really wanted this to be true.

"Could be," Xander agreed neutrally, though most of the double-people he knew weren't really different in personality, just in the stuff that had happened to them. And maybe the choices they made, so...yeah, maybe. "Would you rather be the Ratman with the campy dialogue or the one with the cool gadgets but rubber nipples on the suit?"

Xander speaks this language. There are moments when he pretends not to, but he totally does.

Andrew was suddenly very serious, "These are the questions that every true believer must ask themselves at some point. Is Ratman truly Ratman without the campy speechification? Or does the suit really make the man?"

He pondered, "Rubber nipples." The dreamy quality of his voice and the slight far-off glance probably answered that question.

Xander tried very hard not to make that face you make when you realize just how thin the walls of your dorm room are and you now know more about other people's alone-time than you strictly need to. He might actually have succeeded.

"Sometimes I think I live in the cool-toy world but my dialogue gets written by the other guys," he offered finally.

"I wish I got to play with cool gadgets." Andrew frowned. "We had a button cam for a homework assignment in Awesome class, but I didn't really get a chance to have fun with it because I was so nervous."

"Oh! And I got the lead in the school musical!" Andrew didn't really think that Xander would care, bet they might have been friends in some future time line and it felt like the thing you would share with a friend.

"You wanna sing voluntarily?" Xander asked, then the 'musical' part translated into 'play' in his head, and he sighed and wondered who he should warn about the flying monkeys.

"Yeah," Andrew didn't sound too convincing.

"Actually, I'm really kind of nervous about it. I guess the director saw something in me that fits the part, or at least that's what Neil told me, but I've never actually been in front of a real audience. I, um, I don't know that my voice is... well. It's crap."

It was a rare moment of honesty for Andrew. He gave Xander that look -- the 'if you have anything encouraging or sagely to say, please say it now' look.

"I...uh. Can't say I've ever heard you sing." That he could remember. Possibly he'd blocked it out, though. "Older you is kind of a decent director, though?"

"Yeah?" Andrew beamed. "Aww, thanks Xander! That means a lot."

And it did.

Which is why Xander didn't mention that Buffy's opinion of his filmmaking skills tended to involve the words 'ass,' 'stake,' and 'so help me God.'
