Dealing With Stupid People [Tuesday, July 31, 2nd period]

"Today, you will deal with real people, so keep your eye rolling to a minimum, please," Josh said as the students assembled in the Danger Shop. "We will be working...retail!" he said, clapping his hands together.

The Danger Shop turned into a sandwich store ~~of a chain that might be familiar to some of you, oh yes~~. "Half of you will be working behind the counter. The other half of you will be the incredibly irritating customers. Ask how long a foot-long sandwich is! Demand a sandwich with everything except most of the ingredients! Wonder why a sandwich shop doesn't serve Mexican!" Josh's grin turned positively evil. "And you customer service types--remember to smile. And, um, not to punch anyone."

Aly came in - with coffee - and eyed the setup as she made her way over to Josh. "You're a cruel man, you know."

"Hi, you," Josh replied with a smile. "And yes, yes I am." He reached behind the counter. "Hairnet?"

"If you give me one, I'm so not sharing my coffee," she said, grinning at him.

"You drive a hard bargain," Josh said, leaning in for a kiss, "but I think I can give in on this without feeling like less of a man."

Aly leaned up to kiss him back, careful not to spill the coffee. "Well, there's coffee at stake and it's still morning, I think much could be rationalised with that."

"Very true," Josh said, trying to outsneak a spy and take the mug away.

This was doomed to fail.

"Hey!" Aly frowned at Josh, thwapping his hand. "I already said I'd share."

"Share faster!" Josh demanded.

She eyed him then deliberately took a sip before offering him the mug.

"Evil, cruel, mean girlfriend," Josh said, then began crooning to the mug.

It was a little pathetic, yeah.

Aly laughed. "Maybe next time you won't try to steal my coffee."

"Maybe next time I'll be better at it," Josh said.

That was probably not going to be the case.

"You very well might," Aly teased. "But I doubt it."

"Maybe I could be taking ninja-ing night classes in Alexandria or something!" Josh tried.

No, he wasn't.

Jim stopped by after class with a look on his face that suggested that there may be some sort of mischief afoot. "Professor Lyman? Do you have a second?"

"Of course!" Josh said. "If you want a sandwich, you have to ask the people with hairnets, though."

"Technically, that would make me a stupid person, wouldn't it?" Jim joked. "No, I just had breakfast anyway."

"It's more for the look on their faces," Josh said, pointing over at the sulking students. "God, I love my job."

"If I had gotten here sooner, I would have given them hell," Jim said. "I actually needed to ask a favor to help me deal with a freedom of the press issue."

"Ahh, yes, I heard about our new..." Josh looked around, waved at the squirrel, and carefully enunciated, "headmistress. Charming woman."

He hoped squirrels didn't have finely honed sarcasm detectors.

"You know me, always willing to defend the Constitution. How can I help?"

"Personally, I don't think I can do the radio with restrictions like that. But my cousin with a high-pitched, squeaky voice is coming into town soon and I wanted to celebrate that with some balloons. I figured with all the dances and stuff, student council might have a helium tank that I could use to fill up some balloons to celebrate my cousin stopping by," Jim said. "And, you know, just buying some helium balloons takes away the fun of doing it yourself."

It wasn't the hardest code to break, but he trusted that the squirrels would be good to him and stick to the cover story.

Josh carefully suppressed a howl of laughter. "I love when relatives come to town. I'd be happy to help. ~~Handwavily~~ Stop by my office before they arrive and I'll hook you up."

"Thank you, sir. And if you ever want any outside help annoying your students, just let me know," Jim said.

"You're one the short list," Josh promised with a smile. "See you soon."
