Flight & Flying [Thursday, July 26, 3rd period]

Anakin never bounced. It was undignified. But he was awfully smile-y today.

And no, he wouldn't explain why.

The flight simulator had been reconfigured again--this time to something that should seem a bit more familiar to Earth-based students: The F-16 Flying Falcon.

Anakin clasped his hands behind his back and began speaking. "This is one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this world," he began. "It's good in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards."

He opened the simulator door and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are located in the same place. The F-16 just isn't as sensitive as the starfighter--you'll have to yank harder at the joystick to get the same reaction."

The way his lips quirked up made it a little obvious that he wasn't entirely oblivious to the innuendo that might've been found in that statement. "You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so turns won't be as fast, and if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you might pass out. That's not exactly what I had in mind for today, so please don't do that," he concluded quickly.

Irulan approached Anakin and stepped forward weakly, "Excuse me, professor?"

Anakin's lips quirked up in a wry smile. "I'm so pleased you could finally join us."

Anakin could wield sarcasm like a weapon.

Irulan bowed her head, looking serene but wincing internally, "I apologize for missing the last few classes, I was... indisposed. But, if I may, sir, I would like to make up for the classes I have missed."

"And how would you propose to do that?" Anakin replied.

"Um..." Irulan trailed off, flustered, she hadn't thought that far ahead, "Perhaps I would... I could... write a paper on how ineffective my empire's system of flight is?"

Yes, she has no idea what she was talking about, this was probably why the Reverend Mother kept repeating the words: 'Preparation'.

Anakin's eyes danced with amusement for a brief second before becoming the Very Serious Jedi again.

"That sounds perfect," he said. "I look forward to reading it."

"Oh," She hadn't exactly expected that idea to fly. Stupid mouth. "Of course, professor, when would you require it?"

"I believe that turning it in by the next class gives you sufficient time to research and write," Anakin decided with a nod.

Irulan bowed her head, "As you wish, Professor Skywalker." She hesitated then asked, "In your galaxy, sir, if I am to take the example of this class, you do not rely on special medicine to pilot a ship to jump through other systems?"

Adam felt really bad about missing two weeks of classes. Which was why he made his way over to Anakin, to apologize. "Professor Skywalker?"

"I'm so pleased you took the time from your busy schedule to join us," Anakin said dryly.

That would be Adam grinning sheepishly. "I wanted to apologize for not making it to class the past two weeks," he began. "I was really sick, I probably should've e-mailed you. It was wrong of me not to."

Why yes, Adam had realized his mistake. But he'd been bed ridden for two weeks. That wasn't fun. "Again, I'm sorry for missing class. Is there any way I could make it up?" He wasn't so sure there was, and he'd understand that.

Anakin's eyes flickered a bit with sympathy but he had a reputation as a hard-ass to maintain.

"You don't need to make anything up," Anakin finally said, cutting the poor kid a break. "You just missed a chance to practice in space." He walked over to his class schedule and checked the itinerary. "And we'll be doing that again next week," he said, eyes going a little flat.

He'd forgotten Naboo was coming up.

Adam nodded, relieved. "Okay, thank you," he smiled ever so slightly. "I'm looking forward to it."

"Yes," Anakin said, chewing on his lip. "It's...quite a battle sequence."

He straightened his shoulders. "I shall see you next week."

It was a very obvious dismissal.

The F16 was a little bit too similar to the Blackbird for Rogue's comfort.

"Um... Anakin? I... think I need to sit this one out," she said. No doubt the Jedi would pick up all sorts of strong emotions from her, primarily sadness and guilt.

Anakin gave her a confused look, picking up on the emotions but not having enough background to understand why a simulator would make anyone feel guilty. "Okay..." he said slowly.

He moved closer. "Avoiding a problem doesn't make it go away, you know," he said quietly.

"I know," Rogue replied. "It's just... a long story."

"I've got all kinds of time, Marie," Anakin said, "and I'm not effective as a teacher if you're not willing to learn."

Rogue glanced around. "Not in front of all these people," she said. "Can I stop by your office?" And tell you what a failure I was and how I got someone killed? she added silently.

Anakin had caught both parts of that comment, and his eyes widened. "I'm around all day Tuesday," he said. "Stop in then."

It wasn't exactly a request.

"I work on Tuesdays, but I can stop by before that," Rogue said, unaware that Anakin had picked up on what she thought were her secret thoughts.

"Make sure you do," Anakin said. "The class builds on previous lessons. It will only get more complicated from here."
