Applied Ethics A - Friday, Period 1 [13.07.07]

Harriet had handwavily arranged for the class to meet in the Danger Shop. It looked like a perfectly ordinary classroom, which, yes, might be a waste of its abilities, but it made her happy.

"Good morning. My name is Harriet Jones, Applied Ethics teacher," she said briskly, smiling a welcome once everyone had arrived. A close observer might have noticed her hand twitching a little, as if she'd started to reach for something and stopped herself. "Welcome, and please feel free to call me Harriet."

"Let's start, shall we?" She pressed her hands together and beamed at the class. "This is Applied Ethics, which I hope we can manage to make at least a little bit interesting. And, to be completely fair, I'll admit I have no experience as a teacher, but I have had a great deal of experience trying to make the right choice in difficult situations, as, I'm sure, have many of you." She looked around the room, smiling at each student.

"It's seldom easy. Sometime there is no right choice, or so it seems, sometimes the cost of making what you think is the right choice is too high. Learning to think about what and why and how we make the choices we do, and a bit of practice making them, should hopefully make those hard choices a little bit easier when you encounter them." She shook her head. "But how about if we save that for another day?"

"This class, we'll just get to know each other a little. Introduce yourself, tell us your name, a bit about yourself, why you chose this class, and, if you don't mind, also tell us something that's important to you - a person, an idea, a place, anything you like - and what you'd do to protect it." She nodded at one of the students. "If you wouldn't mind starting us off?"

[ooc: Plz wait for OCD is up. Harriet is quite serious - if your character would not be comfortable talking about something important to them and what they'd do to protect it, they can feel free to say so.]

"I'm Gwynn Hood... and to be honest, I'm not sure how I ended up in this class. As to what I think is important?" She lifted her chin a little. "Freedom and the right to individuality. I'd do anything I had to in order to protect it."

Gwynn shook her head. "My people back at home have long been in the group of the few while a corrupt ruler ran rampant through the country."

"I'm Isabel Evans and I thought the class looked interesting," Isabel said, looking down for a moment. "My family is important. There's not much I wouldn't do to keep them safe."

She shrugged, "Well technically I've killed to protect them. So I'm not sure there's anything beyond that."

"I'm Naomi Wildman," Naomi said, "I took this class because it sounded interesting. My family and friends are important to me. I'd go as far as I could possibly go to keep them safe,"

"I'm Wyatt Halliwell," Wyatt said. "I thought the class looked interesting and useful. And I'd do anything to keep my family safe or bring them back to life."

"My name is Turtle Wexler," she introduced herself with a smile, "and I'm taking this class because I love learning about and discussing ethics and the last class in ethics I took here ended up being a real let-down half-way through." She pouted a little there. What? She actually liked Darth Vader, the crazy girl. "I want to be a business lawyer, so ethics are important. My sister's probably the most important thing to me, and I've already done a lot to keep her safe, and will probably keep doing it, too, if I have to, 'cause she's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed..."

"Yeah, no kidding," Turtle said with a roll of her eyes, but then she smiled a little, bouncing because so far Harriet seemed pretty cool. "But I do good, looking out for her."

"My name's Luke Skywalker, and I'm a Jedi," he began, biting back the almost reflexive "like my father before me," "and the practical application of ethics is, well, pretty much our job description. Family is important to me, too, but I also believe that there are lines that you shouldn't cross now matter how important the person is. That's when it stops being about the person you love and more about how important that person is to you."

"I'm Charlie McGee, I'm sixteen and from New York state, I'm taking the class because it sounded interesting," and not all looking for answers, nope, moving on, "and ..." Think think think. "I guess I'd say that people are important. Not abstracts so much. But, whether they're safe, and whether individuals are free. And... I don't know." She fidgeted, not so much uncomfortable as uncertain. "I guess, break the law." There. That covered a lot.

"Name's Peter Petrelli," he said. "I'm taking the class because I want to help people. Be nice to do it ethically. And the most important thing to me? No question. My brother. I'd do anything to keep him safe."

Dawn fidgeted a little in her seat. "I'm Dawn Summers, I'm going to be a senior in the fall, and I'm here because I need to know how to make difficult choices." She paused and thought for a bit. "My sister. And I guess I'd die to save her."

"The name's Jenny Sparks," said Jenny, "I'm from England, obviously, and I'm not sure why I'm in this class, actuallly; someone else signed me up. A finer world is important to me. And I'd do anything for that."

"My name is Peter Parker and I put on a costume and beat up criminals, so this class just seemed like a natural choice for me," Peter said. "And responsibility is important to me. It's kind of a big point. And to keep it safe... Well, it's really an abstract idea, I suppose, so to keep it safe I'd just continue to keep it in mind and try to live responsibly."
