Accelerated Scouting

"Good afternoon campers!" Dale called out cheerfully as he sipped from his giant mug 'o coffee.

"Welcome Accelerated Scouting and our first meeting as Troop 3.14. For those of you not familiar with the Boy Scouts of America, it is a educations for young adults designed to build character, train young people with the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop physical fitness. This is typically a year round programmed designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership.

As you gain skills, perform community service, and participate in various activities in Scouting you can advance in rank eventually reaching the highest rank possible which is the rank of Eagle. Typically this advancement will take anywhere from five to seven years to achieve. What this summer workshop will do is compress the requirements of scouting to an accelerated time frame and get to that goal within seven weeks.

Now we have a lot to do today and not a lot of time to do it with. First! You are now all at the rank of 'Scout'. To progress to the next rank of Tenderfoot we need you to get to work."

Dale gestured over to the side of the campfire ring where shorts, shirts, sashes, socks, and bandannas have been laid out for everyone. "This is your class A uniform. You will wear it to each of our workshops in a proper manner unless we are doing an activity that will require them. Yes, I know they are Dorky. They are however comfortable, durable and stain resistant. Please find an outfit that will fit and change into it.

Where will you change into them, you ask?"

Dale gestured over to a stack of packed tents. "In one of these. Before the end of class you must set up a tent and change into your uniform for inspection. After that you will handwavily memorize the Scout Oath, Law, motto and Slogan. You will then repeat them all to me and then pick a Scout Law that you feel best describes you and one that you need to work on.

You will then pack your tent and take it with you. Why? Because before the workshop next week you will need to go camping overnight and learn to tie at least three knots."

"Where will you learn how to do most of this?" Dale asked as he gestured to a stack of books, "Why in your handy Scout Handbook. Take one and keep it with you. It will be your scouting bible for the next several weeks."

"And finally before we begin, each week you will be earning various merit badges to help you progress in your ranks. I will plan our activities to help you achieve those merit badges required for rank and be listening to the radio to learn of your activities throughout the week to see if you have made any progress on your path to Eagle."

"Go to it Campers! Next week to be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots"

[OCD a coming]

"Loyal would probably describe me best," Dean said with a small shrug. "And I probably need to work on reverent. Not usually a word used to describe me."

Turtle did have a knack for remembering all kinds of legal and financial documents, so getting these relatively memorized was a snap. There might have been a few tricky spots, but she got through them.

"As far as the laws go," she decided, "I would say that loyal is probably my best." Though she was very tempted to go with thrifty, loyal sounded cooler. "And I should probably work on that obedient one."

"Well, I'm loyal," Z mused. Except for the part where she left her best friend behind in tiny card jail la la la not thinking about that. "But I think thrifty might describe me best. I probably need to work on the reverence thing. Or obedience."

"Very well," Naminé sighed. "I'm extremely courteous and not terribly trustworthy, I fear, all things considered. Or reverent, as I'm not certain what I should be reverent towards."

Bridge actually has to think about this. "I'm pretty cheerful," he says. "But, you know, I'd also like to think I'm pretty friendly, and those two do sort of go hand in hand. And so does being kind, really. Because being friendly is a kind of kindness, and while I'm sure it's *possible* to be kind and friendly without actually being cheerful- like maybe in a room full of sarcastic people- I'd find it difficult." He finally stops for a breath, and then adds: "I think I need to work on the thrifty one. I'm not very good at being thrifty."

Jo looked over the list. "Thrifty," she finally said. Because hustling visiting hunters as a source of income was totally thrifty.

Memorising things wasn't exactly Claire's best quiality, but having repeated them to herself while struggling with the tent, she managed them finally.

"And I'm totally friendly," she said cheerfully. "Mayeb could be kinder, though?"

River had serious trouble with this, and frowned, flailing somewhat. "They're just words! Concepts illustrated by conclomerates of syllables. Not clearly defined. I can be brave and cowardly, kind and unkind."

"I'd say loyal would probably describe me best. I'm pretty loyal to my friends back home even though they can really suck sometimes." Dick said. "And uh...I guess I would have to work on being kind.

"Well, I think I'm pretty loyal," John said thoughtfully. He was having a difficult time coming up with a law he needed to work on. "Maybe I should work on being helpful," he said finally.

"I'm pretty reverent when I know who the respect is due to... and I can be loyal to a fault." She thought about this. "I guess thrifty would be the one I need to work on."

She was in no way bringing up the obedient part since she was wont to run into battle when told not to.

"I'm Loyal," Liz said and after a few seconds of hesitation she said quietly, "my bravery needs some work,"

"I am fairly Loyal, but i am not sure how Obedient i am..." Ami said, studying the Laws.

Peter glanced over the list. "They're quite close to a knight's vows," he said thoughtfully. "I would hope I am able to in some part personify all these though I would say that 'trustworthy' would be my strongest. Perhaps 'obedience' is the one I am lacking in. Especially here at school."

Mun remembered everything but the last two bits of the oath. :)

"Hey this is almost exactly like what we have to say." Robin commented. "I think helpful is what best describes me. Uhm, I think maybe thrifty might be what I need to work on."

Abigail looked over the list of laws. "I like to think I'm pretty brave. But I could probably stand to work on my ability to be friendly."
