Accelerated Scouting

"Good afternoon campers!" Dale called out cheerfully as he sipped from his giant mug 'o coffee.

"Welcome Accelerated Scouting and our first meeting as Troop 3.14. For those of you not familiar with the Boy Scouts of America, it is a educations for young adults designed to build character, train young people with the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop physical fitness. This is typically a year round programmed designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership.

As you gain skills, perform community service, and participate in various activities in Scouting you can advance in rank eventually reaching the highest rank possible which is the rank of Eagle. Typically this advancement will take anywhere from five to seven years to achieve. What this summer workshop will do is compress the requirements of scouting to an accelerated time frame and get to that goal within seven weeks.

Now we have a lot to do today and not a lot of time to do it with. First! You are now all at the rank of 'Scout'. To progress to the next rank of Tenderfoot we need you to get to work."

Dale gestured over to the side of the campfire ring where shorts, shirts, sashes, socks, and bandannas have been laid out for everyone. "This is your class A uniform. You will wear it to each of our workshops in a proper manner unless we are doing an activity that will require them. Yes, I know they are Dorky. They are however comfortable, durable and stain resistant. Please find an outfit that will fit and change into it.

Where will you change into them, you ask?"

Dale gestured over to a stack of packed tents. "In one of these. Before the end of class you must set up a tent and change into your uniform for inspection. After that you will handwavily memorize the Scout Oath, Law, motto and Slogan. You will then repeat them all to me and then pick a Scout Law that you feel best describes you and one that you need to work on.

You will then pack your tent and take it with you. Why? Because before the workshop next week you will need to go camping overnight and learn to tie at least three knots."

"Where will you learn how to do most of this?" Dale asked as he gestured to a stack of books, "Why in your handy Scout Handbook. Take one and keep it with you. It will be your scouting bible for the next several weeks."

"And finally before we begin, each week you will be earning various merit badges to help you progress in your ranks. I will plan our activities to help you achieve those merit badges required for rank and be listening to the radio to learn of your activities throughout the week to see if you have made any progress on your path to Eagle."

"Go to it Campers! Next week to be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots"

Turtle was going to take her time putting up her tent until at least someone else had gotten theirs up and put on their uniform. If she was going to look like a dork, she was going to make sure other people around her looked like dorks first.

She totally whistled while she worked.

Dean had no problems putting the tent up, having done so only a couple of weeks earlier on the great paintball camping trip.

The tent wasn't the problem. It was the uniform that was the problem. "No one told me there was going to be dork wear," Dean muttered as he changed into it and with a sigh, came back out.

Naminé was eyeing the tents and uniforms with something approaching horror.

"I don't believe I'm supposed to be in this class, sir."

After a couple of misstarts with the tent, Z was about ready to just change into her uniform in the open. But she finally achieved victory and clambered into her tent to change, emerging a few minutes later dressed in proper Scouting gear.

She hadn't previously thought it was possible, but she seemed to have found herself in a uniform even more unfortunate than SPD's. Oh, well. At least it wasn't wool.

Bridge gets his tent set up fairly quickly and changes in to the uniform, leaving his own gloves on since the uniform doesn't come with any. After doing so, he stands at attention outside the tent, ready for inspection.

Jo stared at the uniform a moment, then put it on, tying the ends of the shirt above her midriff rather than buttoning it.

Claire poked at the tent with her foot for a second before finally getting down to try and pitch it.

There wasn't any swearing, per se, but there was the occasional glare.

Johnny looked over the tent a couple of times before trying to set it up. He'd never actually been camping before in the woods with nature and stuff, so it took him three and a half tries to get it set up, and then some more working on it before it stopped wobbling around.

He frowned at the uniform. "They didn't say that this'd be required in the sign up description."

River quickly figured out how the tent should be assembled. She did try out a few variations of her own invention, however, just to see how they turned out, but finished with a neatly and correctly pitched tent.

The uniform was indeed practical and she had no objection with it.

Thank god Dick got practice setting up a tent during the paintball trip otherwise it would have taken him a lot longer to set up the tent.

"Well, I feel like a dork." Dick said as he stepped out of his tent.

John set up his tent with ease as camping was nothing new to him. He was enjoying himself up until he put the uniform on and emerged from his tent. He looked down at the super long girly socks. "Are the socks really necessary?" hewhined asked.

Gwynn had no problems pitching the tent -- though, if she did indeed go camping, it was doubtful she would be sleeping in the tent.

She went in and changed into the strange uniform... though the bandana confused her a little bit. Looking around at others finally gave her the idea of how it was supposed to go, and she waited for inspection.

Hrmm... the shorts were much more comfortable in the heat than her leathers were.

Liz had absolutely no idea how to put a tent up. After a few seconds of just staring at it she slowly began attempting to put it up. She wasn't having much luck though.

Ami figured out the tent. It made some amount of logical sense after all. And the uniform was no more dorky then a sailor fuku.

Peter didn't have a problem putting up the tent, but the uniform reminded him far too much of the school uniforms he had to wear in Britain. He realised just how much he didn't miss them.

Pam reluctantly tugged on the uniform and hoped no one took pictures.

The tent was a different story. She kept managing to get it about halfway up before it fell down on her.

Robin had come already dressed in his Frog Scout uniform, complete with merit badge sash with his swimming, hopping, and punk merit badges.

He started doing his best to pitch the ginormous tent.

Troy struggled a bit with the tent, trying to get it properly pitched, but ended up with something that was sagging at the top. He also had two poles left in his hand.

Thanks to the camping trip from a few weeks prior, Abigail didn't have much trouble pitching her tent. The uniform, however, was a problem of its own. "There really is no way to wear this and have it not look dorky."

"Loyal would probably describe me best," Dean said with a small shrug. "And I probably need to work on reverent. Not usually a word used to describe me."

"Excuse me, Mr. Cooper?" Dean asked. "Are some of these tasks retroactive? Because I went camping overnight a couple of weeks ago..."

And, even if it did end, there would still be the uniforms. *nod*
