Interdisciplinary Studies, Class 7, Wednesday, Period 5

Today's class met at the main campfire which, despite the harsh heat, was piled full of large logs and ready for a bonfire. Nearby was what looked at first glance to be some sort of salad bar, and a large freezer.

"So," Squall said, once the students had arrived. "Last week you found food in the wilderness. Now, you need to cook the food, and if you pretend that it's winter, you also need to keep warm. So. You need to start a fire." He passed out handouts and explained a little bit about fire bows, fire pistons, and flint and steel. "...Which all suck," he concluded. "If you really want to start a fire, you need one of two things: these" -- a box of matches -- " or this" -- a butane lighter. I hope you all brought the matches I gave you last week, because I want you to go make a fire, and if you don't have them, that might be hard."

He shrugged. "Or maybe it'll be easy." Squall was surrounded by a green glow for a moment, and then the large campfire in front of him burst into a ginormous fireball before settling down to burn cheerfully.

(Impressive, but it would have been less dangerous if I'd had any charges of lower-level Fire spells.)

When all -- most? some? -- of the fires were going, Squall called them back.

"Okay, party time. Over there is food. Cook it. Make something good." He shrugged. "The food you gathered last week is in the freezer, if you really want it. Other than that? Just cook stuff or whatever."

[Wait for it... Wait for it...]

Setsuna had a mantra in her head as she crouched down beside the Sphinx campfire, gave her wrist a flick that summoned up her little flame, and started the fire without those matches that she didn't bring from last week.

The mantra? Don't be all uppity about how Squall's not the only one who can play with fire, and subtlety is an art anyway....Don't be all uppity about how Squall's not the only one who can play with fire, and subtlety is an art anyway....Don't be all uppity ....

Ami found an unused campfire and mad ea little hut of sticks, added some paper and lit a match. Slowly she added bigger and bigger sticks, as the fire got bigger and bigger.

"A few times, yes."

He goes to Platypus' campfire - it had been his cabin, after all - and plucks the matches (which is stored with pretty much everything else Squall's handed them, minus the fish scale, in his backpack) from a pocket. There's plenty of dry grass around, so he picks plenty, sets it under the logs, and FWOOM.

It takes a while to get it actually burning - the logs don't go up in flames easily.

"Whatever," he says, but does as he's told. Fires light a whole lot faster when you do it right.

Pfft, matches, Jo knelt by Jackalope campfire and took out a mini-blowtorch.

Don't ask where she got it. You really don't want to know.

Meh, matches. Alphonse had made plenty of fires before without the use of them, but in the end, he wasn't trying to impress anybody. He had to admit, it made lighting things easier. He set up the campfire over at Basilisk properly and set it aflame with a match; not too big of a fire, it was hot enough as it is outside, but large enough to keep it burning for some time.

Molly learned this last summer! She stripped some bark off the logs to use for tinder and got her fire going after using only a couple of matches.

Naminé hadn't brought her matches. She considered for a moment, and then decided she didn't much care to walk all the way back. Nor did she care if it counted as cheating.

She portaled back to her room, grabbed them, and then found her way over to the Abominable Snowfire to get it started.

Naminé flushed. "That ... was cheating, I suppose. I forgot all about the matches, and I didn't have the patience to go back for them. Although I suppose it's one of the resources I'd have in the wild, right?"

"Oh. Fair enough." Naminé nodded. "It's ... just connecting points, that's all. Every point in every world can be reached from darkness. But darkness itself is a placeless sort of void. If you travel there, you can get to any point in any world just as easily as the last."

She held her hand out and another portal formed. "So, really, travelling to my dorm room or back to where I'm from is simply a matter of stepping into the void and then out again. That's all."

"Use it?" She gave him a curious look. "How? I mean, other than the obvious, which is escaping from danger."
