Freelance Treasure Hunting, Monday, Period 5, Class #7

"Good afternoon," Vala greeted the students as they entered the Danger ~~Room~~ Shop, sitting on the console next to what could be considered a basket for tribute. Just because she was no longer a warlord is no reason not to accept gifts if they were willingly offered. "Welcome to our last class session together. Which by no means you shouldn't still stop by my...well, I don't quite have an office, but if you need me for something, leave a note at the radio station or on my voice mail, and I'll get back to you."

Surrounding Vala were a number of assorted vehicles, from bicycles to motorcycles to flashy sports cars to rickshaws and old pickup trucks and non-descript sedans. For the more futuristically inclined, there were also a number of swoop bikes and speeders, as well as other flying devices. No large ships, though.

"Today, we'll be discussing how to make a getaway. Often, when you're planning a ~~heist~~ treasure hunting expedition, you'll need to do some research before the event, as well as traveling in preparation and during the expedition. You'll need to be as inconspicuous as possible, of course, so you'll want to choose a vehicle that blends in with both who you've decided to be and with the area you're researching."

"However, you also want to be sure that your vehicle can get you away from wherever you are, again as inconspicuously as possible, but also quickly. Obviously, these things do not always go smoothly or predictably, and you'll want to be able to get away if at all possible. Things to consider include conspicuousness, available fuel, and maneuverability, and whether or not it's large enough to carry the treasure you're finding. Today, you'll be telling me which vehicle you would choose and why, then drive your chosen vehicle around an obstacle course--if you choose to have someone with you as your driver, make sure it's someone you trust implicitly."

She cleared her throat. "Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for being a wonderful class and I wish you good luck." She paused. "And a cut of any proceeds."

"Boys suck, and Annette Hargrove is a jerkface."

There, that summed it up nicely and bitterly.

"Oh." Rikku nodded. "Any, uh, boys in particular? And what'd Annette do? Oh! Are you the one that keeps kicking her?"

"Keeps....!" Turtle's nails nearly pierced straight through her hands as her fists clenched. "I haven't kicked her in forever, and every single time I have, she's deserved it! I never kick anyone unless they absolutely deserve it! Unlike Annette, who will fling potatoes at you when all you're doing is sitting there trying to enjoy your lunch! Which, sometimes, is hard enough as it is in this place! And, yes," the rant continued, "one boy in particular. Johnny 'Biggest Pig on the Planet' Storm. What a jerkface!"

"Whoa, whoa, hey!" Rikku waved her arms quickly. "This was totally a while ago when she said it, like, when we were all kids or something? And you've never kicked me so I totally believe you on the people deserving it, 'cause I never punch people unless they do and I get detention for it anyway but really, if someone says 'bring it' I think it's their own fault if you do, you know? She threw potatoes at you? And who's Johnny Storm?"

"Yes, at lunch today. I was just sitting there, and she was giving me the stink-eye, so I ignored her because I was in no mood to argue with her and she flung potatoes at me. And Johnny Storm is a pig-headed jerk who thinks it's okay and there's nothing wrong with kissing girls, even when they have boyfriends."

She rounded it off with an impressive pout.

"Dude! That is seriously not cool." Rikku folded her arms. "Did you fling 'em back?! And what's with that? If someone kissed me and I didn't want them to, I'd totally punch them right in the face. Did you punch him!?"

"Of course I didn't fling them back!" Turtle grunted. "I'm not playing those stupid little games with her anymore. I don't need to lower myself to her level. And he didn't kiss me. I...I don't have a boyfriend. But he kissed Annette. Which is not only evil on the fact that she does have a boyfriend, but also because she's...she's....Annette."

"That just sucks." Rikku folded her arms. "I thought she was nice, why is she being all mean to you?"

And she tilted her head a little. "Wait, so ... he kissed Annette? Why didn't she punch him? Because dude, if someone as all 'Ohhhh, I'm gonna kiss you now, screw your stupid boyfriend', they'd be on the floor bleeding."

"He sure as heck didn't look like he was punched," Turtle said, sneering slightly. "Ego certainly wasn't bruised. And I don't know why Annette's mean to me, she just is. Everyone else is all, like, 'oh, but she's so nice!' She hates me, and I can't even figure out why. Yeah, I've kicked her a few times, but only because she started it. Ever since this one food fight, which I that was all in good fun, but ever since then..."

Turtle dragged off, hiding her face in her arms because she was going to start crying if she didn't stop soon. She'd start thinking about the braid, and that wouldn't be any good at all...

Rikku leaned over, reaching a hand out to Turtle's arm. "Hey," she said softly. "Maybe they just don't know 'cause she's never like that to them, yeah? But if she's mean to you like that then she can't be a nice person, right?"

"I just don't get," Turtle said, voice muffled because her head was staying right where it was at, thank you very much, "why I seem to be the only person on the planet she hates."

"I don't know," Rikku shrugged. "That sucks. Maybe you remind her of somebody else she doesn't like, or maybe she just decided to be super-nice to everybody else no matter what and takes all her frustrations out on you. It's not fair, yeah?"

"Not fair at all," Turtle muttered. "But, whatever. I don't care; if it make her feel better about herself being mean to me, well, la-de-dah."

"That doesn't make it okay." Rikku folded her arms. "Someone oughta tell her that! That's not right at all! Maybe ... maybe it's all a big ... misunderstanding? Or maybe she's a total jerkface and you're just the first person to find out and later you get to be all 'ha, ha, I told you so.' Yeah?"

"I'd rather not be tortured than get to hold it over people's heads later," Turtle said. "I'm just going to keep trying to ignore her, I think. Like, the next time she throws potatoes at me, or cuts off my hair, or whatever, I'll just not say anything. Maybe if I just stop reacting, whatever enjoyment she gets out of being such a masochist will...go away."

"Yeah. I kinda know that feeling," Rikku said, making a face. "'I told you so' doesn't really ... your hair? Wait, what happened to your hair?"

Turtle groaned. She had to mention the hair, didn't see?

She turned her head, so that it was still resting on her arms but that she was looking at Rikku now, frowning sadly. "Remember that really long, pretty, awesome braid I used to have?" She didn't talk to Rikku often, sure, but she was pretty sure they knew each other back then. And, yes. Back then. It seemed....forever ago.

Rikku tilted her head a little, thinking. "Yeah, totally. I mean, I saw it, you know? But your hair now is really cute, too, yeah? Probably way easier to take care of. Is that why you ..."

She blinked for a second, and then her jaw dropped. "No way."

Turtle whimpered, attempting really hard not to cry. Her whole jaw was quivering from the attempt, and she let out a slightly squeaking "MmHm," as she nodded. "Right off. While I was sleeping...."

She had to bit on her lip now. Why did it still hurt so much....?

"What a bitch," Rikku said firmly. And then clapped a hand over her mouth. "Oh! Sorry! I mean ... yeah. Uh. I just meant ... that's terrible. Who would do that to somebody!? That's just ... mean!"

Turtle didn't say anything. What could she say? 'I told you so'?

She did, however, let out a long, deep sigh.

Rikku bit her lip. "Uh. Can I ... help? Beat somebody up or tell someone off or ... I dunno. You want ice cream?"

"S'kinda in the past now, y'know?" Turtle said, looking toward Rikku. "Mister Deadpool took me out for ice cream after it happened. It...helped. But...I mean, hey, ice cream's ice cream, yeah? I'd be a fool to turn it down." She gave Rikku a slight smile.

"Well, the hair is, but the whole, him being a jerk and her being a jerk isn't. That's, like, ongoing." Rikku nodded. "Oh, yeah! He mentioned that. I got ice cream for doing minion-stuff and bugging Aly for him. He's really awesome, you know?"

She smiled back. "Ice cream's always a good idea. When do you wanna go?"

"Yeah. Mister Deadpool's really the best...When's good for you? Any time this week, as long as it's after the store closes, should be okay with me."
