Self Confidence the Ares Way, [Thursday, Period 2]

"So," Ares said, after the class had assembled. "You have fought to defend your town, you have made alliances, and you have made enemies."

"What next? Simple enough question, but the answer? Different story entirely. This class I want you to discuss what you do next. Taking into account your army, your allies, your enemies, your growing influence on events, your new and increased self confidence. Just remember, you have power now, and it does have that little tendency to corrupt."

"We'll also be doing something special next class, so be on your toes."

Naminé couldn't stop her mind from going in circles. He was dead. He wasn't. He had decided to never bother coming back. He was stuck somewhere and she'd never know for sure what happened to him. And she had to sit here and listen to this smug presumed-god go on and on about scenarios which were so amazingly unrealistic as to be comical, placing her as some sort of expert assistant just to mock her, and she couldn't bear a second of it any longer.

She stood up sharply. "What's the point of this exercise? Presuming there is one."

Ares grinned. "The point of the exercise is to find out what you would all do in a position of power."

"I don't intend to be in one," she said, folding her arms. "What does my hypothetical behavior in a situation of power have to do with self-confidence? What has any of this class had to do with it?!"

"Because if you're in a position of power and you don't have self-confidence, you're dead."

"Your concern for my welfare is touching," she said acidly. "It's also utterly irrelevant, as I will never be in a position of power. Why didn't you just title this class Bloodthirsty Insanity 101?"

"Are you suggesting there's something wrong with my teaching method?" Ares asked.

"I'm suggesting that you aren't teaching us, but rather amusing yourself at our expense." She glared. "Why else would you make me your assistant?"

Well, she wasn't entirely wrong there. "Maybe I saw some kind of potential," he said lazily.

"Indeed," she snapped. "I'm filled with potential. I'm so very eager to learn about being a crazed warlord and slaughtering people. It's why I took this class, really."

"Tell me," Ares said. "Would you have criticised and openly challenged the authority of a teacher in front of your classmates six weeks ago?"

"I doubt ..." Naminé stopped herself short from saying that she might not have done that six hours ago, because ... that wasn't entirely true. She'd been feeling odd for a while now. Angry and defiant and tired of taking things like always. Was that because of him? Was she turning into something like him?

She closed her eyes for a long moment and then sat down again, a touch of color in her cheeks. "My apologies for disrupting your class."

"Don't apologise," Ares said, grinning widely. "I would be doing my job if at least one of you didn't show some backbone like you just did."

Naminé shook her head. "I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm having an unfortunate day, that's all."

"Buck up," Ares said. "It'll seem better tomorrow."

"I hope it will," she said softly. "Thank you, sir."
