Women and Gender Studies, 6/20/07

Today, the students were greeted with table upon table of art supplies, including paints, clay, plaster, paper mache, feathers, popsicle sticks, markers, plastic rhinestones, and of course, glitter.

"Alright people, let's get right to it, this week. Now, we've been doing this for a little while so you all should have started to get a pretty good idea of what your personal gender indentificationing is! Which is why today, we're going to have a little fun."

"But only a little,"

"Oh, hush, Syvvie!" Maddie gestured to the table. "You see we have lots and lots of artistic supplies up here. We want you to go ahead and make a self-portrait. But! There's a catch! There's always a catch! You might notice that we don't have any MIRRORS around here! That's because you're not allowed to look at yourself while you do this. That's right!"

"That's right!"

"We're not interested in seein' your physical outdoor self, today, we want to see your inner self. Your mental image of who you are on the INSIDE. And there ain't no mirror that can tell you that."

"Don't they say the eyes are the mirrors to the soul?"

"Doors, Syvvie. Doors, not mirrors."

"No, I don't think that's it, either,"

"Anyway, no editing, no peeking, just . . . have at it! Make a mess and lets see your gorgeous inner-selves!"

[ooc: OCD is coming up. Art supplies are entirely moddable.]

Peter wasn't much of an artist, but he tried to see what he could do with stick figures.

A big black marker helped with making the bangs.

Sam's inner self was looking a little more emo than he wanted it to, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to mess with the glitter to balance that out.

"Your inner self isn't into colour, huh?" she commented, splattering her own 'inner self' with a bit of yellow paint.

"No, I guess not," Sam admitted. "Definitely not into yellow," he added with a smirk, before adding some blue to his own picture.

Mac arched an eyebrow. "You have a specific problem with yellow?"

"It's...bright," Sam finally said. "Which doesn't mean it's a bad color. Just a perky one."

"I need a bit of perk in my life right now," Mac said with a shrug. "So, yellow it is. You should try it."

Sam shrugged, having no reason to not take her advice, and added a bit of yellow around the edges. "Are you okay? If you don't mind me asking."

"Could be worse," Mac replied, somewhat evasively as she did a bit more splattering. Well, it's true. She's better than she was last week, and infinitely better than the week before that.

"But, could be better too?" Sam replied, making some green with the yellow and blue before adding that to his picture.

"That's usually the way it goes," Mac said, giving a slight shrug. "I hear things like this improve with time, though," she added, although she didn't necessarily sound like she really believed that yet.
