John met the class by the campfire in the cabin clearing ~~as all students had been handwavily informed to do so~~. There was still the usual coffee and sign in sheet, as well as a handout. There was also a pile of equipment -- protective goggles and facemasks, camouflage jumpsuits and a wide variety of weapons.

"Good morning," John said. "Now that you've had a chance to try out and hopefully get comfortable with different types of guns, we're going to have a little fun and test how good you've become in a situation more like real life. I'm going to divide you into two teams and send you out into the woods. The object is to eliminate everyone on the opposing team before they eliminate you.

"Now obviously this isn't something we can use real guns and live ammo for," John said with a faint smile, "so we're going to be using paintball weapons. The handout you picked up gives some basic information on this kind of exercise and there's a number of differently modified paintball guns for you to choose from. The protective goggles and facemasks are mandatory; other than that you can pick and choose among the rest of the equipment for the combination that you think will best help you to win."

John looked around at them. "The teams will be as follows: Team One will consist of Jo Harvelle, Chris Halliwell, Lana Lang, Tannim Drake, Luke Skywalker, Billy Kessler, Z Delgado and Dawn Summers. Team Two will consist of Andros, John Sheppard, Wyatt Halliwell, Abigail Whistler, Peter Pensvie, Eve Levine, Bridge Carson and Turtle Wexler. Are the any questions?"

Once he had answered any questions there were, John said, "Okay, you've ten minutes to get together with your team and arm up. After that it'll be time to head into the woods and start the exercise."

Luke was bouncing on his toes as he put on his rockin' safety equipment. "We can totally take them," he declared with a grin.

Glaring and muttering under her breath, Jo checked her gear.

John couldn't help but notice Jo's mood. "Something wrong?" he asked her.

Jo broke off from her muttering about stupid redneck MIT dropouts, and looked up at John. "Everything's fine," she said. "Or it will be once I kill Ash."

Lana was there, looking a little unsure about this whole thing.

"You okay?" Chris asked.

"Yeah, I guess," Lana said. "I just... I just don't think this course and I are a good fit."

"In what way?" Chris asked, giving her a concerned look.

"I just... I thought it would be good for me to learn how to handle a gun and all that, but... The bigger weapons and the hunting each other, even though it's just paintball guns..." She shook her head. "It just really makes me uncomfortable."

Chris nodded. "So don't do it if it makes you uncomfortable," he said. "But maybe if you think of it like playing tag instead of hunting each other, it will make it easier?"

"That's what I'm trying to do," she agreed. "And I know if someone had just said, 'hey, let's play paintball', it wouldn't bother me at all, but knowing why we're doing it." She couldn't quite hide the little shudder.

"I know. I'm being silly."

"No you're not," Chris assured her, patting her shoulder reassuringly. "You've got a good heart and you don't want to think about hurting someone."

Lana smiled up at him. "Thanks. And no, I don't like the idea of hurting anyone. I think I got in over my head with this class."

"I think it's good for you to know how to protect yourself," Chris argued lightly. "But that doesn't make you a bad person."

"I know," Lana said. "And I do want to learn that. But knowing that if you pick up a gun you should be prepared to fire it and if you fire it you should be prepared to kill someone... I guess it's just kind of too real for me."

Chris nodded. "If it was a choice between living or dying, I think you could do it."

[crashing now, night1]

Lana's lips twitched a little sadly. "I know. I'm sure I could. And I don't know quite how I feel about that."

[Night!]

"I don't think there's anything wrong with killing someone to save yourself," Chris said. "So you shouldn't feel bad about it."

Lana nodded. "I guess."

Chris smiled. "Besides, do you really want to pass up an opportunity to shoot Wyatt?"

Lana couldn't help the small smile that started. "You do have a point there."

"Come on, we can team up," Chris said. "I'll distract him and while he's focusing on me, you can get him."

Non-lethal and shooting people? Dawn was good with that. She grinned as she put on her own safety equipment and prepared to be zomg sneaky.

"Try not to let me shoot you," Z suggested to her team. "My aim is fail."
