Self Confidence the Ares Way, [Thursday, Period 2]

"So," Ares said, after the class had arrived at the main campfire. "Last week, you all decided that the best thing to do after being banished from your village was to raise an army to create a kind of bufferzone to prevent your village being attacked again." Which they hadn't, exactly, but Ares wasn't going to let that stop him.

"Now, after you've got the hang of this whole leading an army thing, you find you're quite successful at it, and in short order are building up a decent reputation. One day, while doing your thing, your men capture a prisoner, a minor general of a smallish empire, who says you can fetch a handsome ransom for him. What do you do? Do you get him go? Do you ransom him, kill him?"

"Now, assuming you decide to ransom him, which being the intrepid young warriors you are, I am, you obviously don't treat him shabbily, after all, there's a meal ticket riding on it, and hey, this guy is rather charming, so you two get along...well, given our classroom setting, let's just leave it as getting along rather well. Now, before you let him go, your hostage proposes you meet up in a couple of days and start a new alliance. Again what do you do? Why?"

"However, once you meet up with your new 'ally' again, it turns out that it all was a bit of a trap and you get crucified. Whoops. Luckily for you, you get freed from the cross by a 'good friend', and taken to a healer to do something about that whole shattered lower legs thing you've got going for you, but not before your friend gets skewered by a couple of arrows and dies."

"Discuss the most self-empowering way you can think of to deal with this betrayal, and your loss of both your friend and the use of your legs for the foreseeable future."

Startled, Karal glanced at her. "He can not be," he said firmly, no room in his voice for doubt. "A god would not behave as he does."

Altra flicked his ears, back and forth, and glanced at Naminé, before returning to Ares watching.

Naminé looked at Ares, and then back at Karal again. "Hades is the vice-principal here, isn't he?"

Altra twitched. "I think so?" Karal replied hesitantly. He'd heard the name, but he'd yet to encounter the vice-principal. "Is that, I mean, is that important?"

"It might be. It's possible that he isn't the Hades I know." Naminé looked down for a moment. "But if it is, then ... I'm not certain that you're right, about the behavior of gods."

"Ares apes a god of legend in this world, and I believe he may be a mage, but that does not make him an actual god," he said firmly, tempering it with a smile. Karal had an extremely idealised view of gods, based as it was on his Vkandis and the Shin'a'in's Star-Eyed. "Perhaps this Hades does the same thing. A true god watches over his people, sets them on the path to find a good future. He does not indulge in petty maliciousness and nasty tricks."

Altra twitched again, tail lashing once across the desk, before he settled.

"Perhaps you're right. The Hades I knew -- knew of, I suppose is more correct -- was dangerous, conniving and manipulative. He played people against one another and schemed. He was also very powerful and did not forgive injury. Not one to be taken lightly."

Naminé looked to Altra, and then back at Karal. "Your cat is very beautiful," she smiled.

This was a topic Karal felt much easier about. And by Altra's reaction - turning to look at Naminé with approval - so did he. Though he was a cat, so praise of any kind always went over well. "Thank you," he said. "Though he is his own cat more than he is mine."

Naminé laughed lightly. "I have heard that, of cats. That they have servants less than owners. I respect that. May I ... ?" She held a hand out tentatively.

"It is up to him." Karal looked at the 'cat. Altra?

Altra flicked his ears once more then moved so he could sniff Naminé's hand, rubbing the side of head against her fingers while he purred. :You meet the nicest people.:

"Of course, my apologies for not asking him directly," Naminé smiled.

She reached out to scritch the top of Altra's head, amused. "It's very nice to meet you. And I would have asked you next, I promise."

:I really like her.:, he said, eyes going half closed as he purred harder.

"I am quite certain he took no offence," Karal said, hiding a smile as he watched Altra. "Or, if he did, you are forgiven."

"I'm glad to hear it. I believe cats are more direct on the matter than most people. No point to holding a grudge on someone who is willing to scratch your ears, after all," Naminé laughed, continuing to do so. "It's pragmatic. I don't believe I caught his name?"
