Construction Site: Wednesday, 6/6

Today, the guys from NPC Construction have a large crane - yeah, that must've been a sight coming across the causeway - set up, working on some of the collapsed upper levels.

"If I didn't mention stay away from the big equipment before?" Xander says. "Which I did? This would be me mentioning it today. If you're not invulnerable or already dead, getting hit in the head with a wrecking-ball doesn't make for the best work-day. And even if you are, it packs a pretty big headache. Which can actually be useful if you're fighting an invulnerable demon or say, a hellgod? But we're not. So. Stick to the safety areas."

Gwynn blinked at him. As there was only guy out there worth looking at, she of course had the obvious conclusion.

"No, I am looking at my boyfriend."

That was not a note of possessiveness at all.

Funny, as far as Anders was concerned there was only one guy out there worth looking at too, so he had reached the same conclusion, only with a different guy.

"Oh," he said, a faint note of distaste in his voice. "Him."

Yes, Anders, provoke the girl who can hurt you in a number of ways.

Especially since if Conner couldn't see her getting into a fight, he couldn't get worried about her being hurt again.

Gwynn narrowed her eyes. "I hope that you just not levy an insult on jhim, sir."

Alas, she was quite sure he had by the tone of his voice.

"Why would I do that?" Anders glanced disdainfully in Conner's direction for a moment. "It's so not worth the effort."

Gwynn stiffened her entire body, her rising anger warring with the pain that caused. She had seen the look and she was not happy.

"He is worth more effort than that prancing fop out there."

Okay, so it wasn't like Anders exactly had any idea what 'prancing fop' meant, but her reaction made it obvious that it was an insult.

"You have got to be nuts," he snorted. "No wonder he likes you."

Gwynn frowned at him.

"What does me liking nuts have to do with Conner liking me?"

"Okay, ew." You really don't want to know where Anders's mind went with that first.

Anders shook his head, almost pitying. "I just have no idea what you see in him, that's all."

She glared. "Ew? There is nothing ew about nuts. They are very tasty and very healthy for you."

No, she really has no idea.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Conner is a wonderful man and he is also my hero. He has always been very kind and a perfect gentleman." She smiled and then bouned a little. "And I really love his kisses."

Poor deluded girl. Anders felt kind of sorry for her.

"Hey, if that's your thing, don't let me kill the buzz for you," he said with a shrug, the pitying note still in his voice. "'cause let me tell you, I've been there and it's really not all that."

Gwynn was starting to get angry. Not only had this child dared to be insulting of Conner... he was now pretending that he had done things that he most certainly had not.

"Excuse me?" she growled. "I am positive that you did not just try to allude to conduct of a poor nature committed by Conner."

Why was Anders being stubborn enough to try and bait her? Why? He had no idea. He was just in a mood to mock Conner today. The pink hard hat made it easy.

"I didn't have to allude. I know," he replied. "Been there, done that, moved on to something better."

He pointed out toward the construction site. "And come on, he wears a pink hard hat."

"You most certainly did not! And... he is much more awesome than that prancing guy you are watching. I like his pink hat. It makes it easier for me to find him."

Gwynn was fairly bristling with rage over what Anders was saying he had done with Conner. "How dare you insult him by lying in that manner?"

Anders held his hands up. "Hey, fine, don't believe me if you don't want to. Just . . . chill, okay? I'm not checking him out, you're not checking Bel out, we don't have to worry about stepping on each other's territory."

Beat.

"He is so not more awesome than Bel. Who doesn't prance, what the frak?"

"I think I shall have to beat you," Gwynn said quite calmly.

But how to arrange a fight without Conner finding out?

Anders laughed, although internally he was flailing a little bit. "You obviously haven't met my girlfriend. Lay a hand on me and you'll have her and Bel to answer to."

Gwynn shrugged. "I can take her out from afar if I need to." She looked at him stonily. "You have lied about and insulted my boyfriend and I will avenge that."

Anders couldn't decide if this was an act, or if Conner really hadn't told her; if it was the latter, he kind of felt sorry for her.

"Ask him yourself," he replied with a shrug, then narrowed his eyes. "Did you seriously just threaten my girlfriend?"

Now re-evaluating that "feeling sorry for her" bit . . .

"You threatened me with her first," she pointed out.

"Did not!" protested Anders -- which was, of course, a total lie.

It was amazing she hadn't hit him already, it really was.

"We will meet in the gym tomorrow and we will deal with the insults you have given."

Hmm. Before Phoebe's workshop, or after? Which way would get him yelled at less?

"Fine," Anders said tightly -- more to keep his voice from cracking than out of animosity. "Tomorrow, in the gym, before lunch."

Maybe he could talk her into a game of H-O-R-S-E . . . ?
