How to Blow Things Up: Period 2 Week 4

Aly had oh so handwavily asked her students to meet her at the main campfire.  When then students arrived, they'd see an assortment of devices that looked a lot like bombs running the gamut from the type of bomb you'd see in the movies to less sophisticated devices

She waited for everyone to arrive then started speaking.  "The last few classes, we've talked about how to blow things up.  Which is, admittedly, a lot of fun and also what the class is about.  Today, however, we're going to talk about what happens when you don't want the bomb to go off.  Disabling explosives is a hugely dangerous task, and in general, it's something you want to call in an expert to deal with."  She grinned.  "But I think we all know that when you need an expert, he or she is usually not around.  So today we - and by we, I mean you - are going to work on disarming explosive devices with not quite so many consequences if it's not done correctly."

Gesturing to the assortment of bombs,  she started discussing bomb disposal techniques including the use of a pigstick because that term is awesome and the ever-popular cutting of the correctly coloured wires.

"Now the trick here is that these devices aren't bombs.  But if they are disengaged incorrectly, they will explode."  She grinned.  "I hope you wore clothes that can get paint on them.  If not -" she pointed to a box "-there are some lovely and very fashionable smocks to put on."

"If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  Otherwise, pair up and have fun."

[OOC:  [personal profile] mouthy_mercwins for suggesting paint bombs.  More information on how this works in the OCD notes which are coming up]

"Haku," he nodded and looked at the bomb, not really sure where to start. "Are you familiar with these?"

"Not this exact kind. But it's similar to ones I've seen before." He cringed. "Recently, even. Recently enough to make things awkward." Kou poked the bomb with one finger. "Are you familiar with them?"

Haku shook his head. "No, I'm afraid not. Our explosives back home are not quite as technological." Haku titled his head as he examined it. "Should we start by cutting some of the wires?"

Yes, it was a shot in the dark.

"For this, I'm thinking I'm going to have to throw out a lot of my previous experience. No two bombs are alike and all." Kou shook his head. "Well, there are wire cutters. Do you want to take the first try?"

"Hmm I supposed I can," Haku smiled coyly and took them, trying to figure out which wire to cut.

"Never the red one," Kou cautioned.

"Are you sure? Because I think that only leaves one option."

"Really?" Kou frowned. "But it's never the red one. So if it's never that in real life, here it must be it...?" He scratched his head. "The choice is yours, princess. It builds character."

"Princess?" Haku raised his eyebrow and smirked, carefully and slowly cutting the red wire.

Kou jumped, but still got massively splattered. "Damn!"

Haku didn't move. He was covered in purple paint.

It was... very different feeling. "I guess it was the red wire."

"I guess so. Real world logic doesn't apply." Kou leaned over to gently wipe some of the paint off Haku's cheek. "Still with me?"

He nodded stiffly and slowly stood away from Kou, dropping the wire cutters and holding his arms out, away from the rest of his body.

"This is rather uncomfortable."

Kou shrugged. "Not really. I've had worse happen." It wasn't like the paint was drying that quickly, after all. "Here, let me try."

He took the wire cutters, snipping the red wire-that-was-not-red this time.

"Well, we know it's not the red one," Haku chuckled, and began to peel his robe off.

"Why not try the other one?"

Kou eyed the other wire, which we'll call green just for hilarity. "...Well, what the hell. At least we won't be blowing up the train station." Taking the risk, he clipped the green wire.
