Arts & Crafts 4, Tuesday Afternoon, A Classroom

Steve looked slightly embarrassed as he stood before the students today, a sheaf of papers in hand. "My original plan for today fell through, so we're going to do something different. You're going to make paper airplanes. Um. With David Hasselhoff's face on them. I'm not sure why." He began handing out the papers. "So, have fun with that, try not to put an eye out, and if you get bored, I also have coloring books and crayons. That should be fun. Right?" he asked hopefully. "Right."

//"Well,"// Setsuna said, with a small grin, //"can you write?"//

//"Of course!"// Ami said, slightly confused as to why that mattered.

//"And can you fold paper?"//

//"In theory."// Ami had done some origami, but not a lot.

//"Then you can most likely do this magic, because that's all there is to it,"// Setsuna's smile grew a little and she reached for a piece of...no. Not that paper. Didn't know who that man was on the paper, but Setsuna'd rather have nothing to do with him. She tore out a page from a colouring book. There was a big duck on it. She frowned. //"The duck might be a problem. We need something blank, so that nothing interferes with the spell..."//

Ami tore a page from her binder. //"this is blank, but quad-ruled. will that do?"//

Setsuna nodded. //"That should be fine. Now, this...."// Very carefully, she began to write on the paper in very neat Japanese, //"is the spell. It is very important that it is written exactly..."//

Ami looked on very carefully, silently memorizing what Setsuna was writing.

//"Once the spell is finished, same spell, every time, you just fold the paper into the shape of the bird. After you've written whatever message on the other side..."// Setsuna carefully executed that step.

Ami continued looking. //"Alright so that text exactly on one side, note on the other, then fold... "// she repeated, almost to herself.

The little paper bird was now sitting in front of her. //"Take note that the spell included precise directions on what you want the bird to do. Then you execute the mudra,"// her hands moved in quick, precise gestures, until finally, two fingers up with the others folded down, she pressed on hand forward.

//"Om!"//

The little paper bird flapped its wings, rose slowly to fly around their heads, and then settle back down where it was before, just as Setsuna had written in the spell. //"That's all there is to it. Like a sword technique, it's the sort of magic that anyone with the patience to make sure it is done correctly can do it. Though, like sword techniques, it takes practise to get it right."//

//"I see."// Ami said, and tore another sheet from her binder. Carefully she wrote exactly what Setsuna had and folded the bird. She moved her hands as instructed, though not quite as quickly as Setsuna had. //"Om."//

curiously she looked to see if it worked.

If Ami had written the spell properly and done the mudra right, then it would work...

Which it did. The little birdie flew around their heads and landed.

Ami clapped with excitement. //"Wow. so... how did that work? Which part made it do that? how do i change it to do something other then fly over our heads? Can it be not a bird but a frog?"//

//"Um, well...it's the combination of spell and mudra, and I don't know any spells for frogs..."//

//"Ok... So it is not an issue of substituting different words?"// Ami peered at the spell wording again. //"So to make it go to your desk and back i would change this and this?"// she asked, pointing.

//"Um, not quite; paper magic is...very specific. The nature of the spell would need to be changed, and a whole new spell would be needed; circular versus straight path, there's a whole new componant added for length and distance and...well, yeah. Simple magic, but they throw a lot of loops in it."//

//"So.. how do i learn the loops?"//

//"You mean...like the loop it just did?"// Setsuna asked, slowly, because she thought she made that clear.

//"No, you said it is simple magic, but there are loops thrown in. so how do i learn all the things that make it less simple?"//

//"Oh! I thought you meant..."// And her finger went around her head to imitate the loops the bird had made before. //"Oh, well, you study, I suppose. You memorize all the different spells, just like you would a chemistry equation or something."//

//"You don't memorize chemistry, you understand it. Are there books on this?"//

//"I'm not entirely sure. There's practically books on everything, though. I was taught by my sensei in training..."//

Ami nodded. //"I will look for a book. In the meanwhile... can you teach me more?"//
