"Good afternoon, my minions," Vala greeted everyone cheerfully from her customary spot atop the desk. "I'm glad to see you all back after last week's adventures. Last week, you escaped with your treasure, or without your treasure, depending on how things went. However, that doesn't always happen."

She leaned forward and confided, "Sometimes, you get caught. And occasionally even incarcerated, or held by the planetary authorities. This is when the real fun starts, because you have to be able to get yourself out of this situation--the problem is that often, you're locked in a small cell with no one but yourself and a guard for company."

"Then, the moment of truth...er, well, the person in charge shows up. If you don't want to spend the rest of your life in that cell--which, trust me, you don't, they smell unbelievably strange, get very little daylight, and often have vermin--you need to be able to tell a convincing story, whether true or," she cleared her throat and looked extra-innocent, "augmented, that will get you out of there."

"Sooooo," Vala grinned at them and leaned back on her hands, "Today, I want you to talk your way out of trouble. Either pick a partner or try to convince me. Anything that gets the other person to believe you and let you out of your 'cell'," she made finger quotes and everything, "is good enough for me. Go to it, and remember to do your best!"

Vala stared at him like he'd lost his mind. "Now where would you hear a dumb thing like that?"

He stared back, looking completely baffled. "That is the rule," although, until recently, not the practice, "in the ecclesiastical courts of Karse, and in the law courts of Valdemar."

"Is this either of those places?" She asked, fairly confident in the answer.

"No," he said slowly. "But what other rule could there be? It is the only one which makes sense."

"You could be guilty until proven innocent. You'd be amazed how many legal systems seem to work that way," Vala told him, "and you're still spending the night in here."

"Very well," he said, lifting his head. "I will willingly stay. I am innocent, and perhaps if I agree to stay I might succeed in changing things," he said, thinking fast. "And I will be sure to tell anyone and everyone, while I am petitioning for change and drawing as much attention to myself as possible, from as high up as possible, how extremely helpful and supportive you were. How you were kind enough to allow me to remain in the cells, even knowing I was innocent, so I could draw attention to the injustice in the system and work to change it." He paused. "I'm sure they will thank you for your actions."

"Excellent!" Vala said cheerfully, "I've always wanted one of those sash things."

"I only hope that you do not find yourself sharing the cell with me, as a result of your good work in overturning the injustices in the system," he said, sitting back and smiling serenely. "I doubt the imprisoned would look at you in too kindly a manner, were you to join them."

"Oh, no, they never house political prisoners with common criminals," Vala told him (from experience, actually). "And of course they'd look favorably on me. That's why I wear black leather."

She nodded once in affirmation.

The mention of the black leather was his undoing. Karal flushed scarlet. "I am sure they do," he said, looking everywhere but at Vala. "If I give up will I fail the assignment?"

"Yes, but you're not being graded," Vala shrugged, "So, really, all you have is a statement from me that you can't lie your way out of an incarceration situation."

Karal could live with that. "All right. I give up," he said, with a tiny rueful smile. "I did whatever it is you say that I did and you may toss me in the cell."

She put her hands on her hips and clucked her tongue at him as she shook her head sorrowfully. "I'm sorry, I don't believe you. You must have a nefarious reason for wanting to be in the cell. Therefore, I am releasing you."

Vala's mind was a strange place.

"I'm sorry, you're what?" he asked, startled into a laugh. His teacher really was very strange.

"Get out of my cell," she ordered him, making shooing motions.

He obediently hopped up and began to leave. "Umm, thank you?"

"No stalling," she said, still with the shooing, "I know what you're up to now. Just get out."

Karal went, completely bemused, still thinking his teacher was very strange, but quite a bit fonder of her than he had been in the first class.
