"Good afternoon, my minions," Vala greeted everyone cheerfully from her customary spot atop the desk. "I'm glad to see you all back after last week's adventures. Last week, you escaped with your treasure, or without your treasure, depending on how things went. However, that doesn't always happen."

She leaned forward and confided, "Sometimes, you get caught. And occasionally even incarcerated, or held by the planetary authorities. This is when the real fun starts, because you have to be able to get yourself out of this situation--the problem is that often, you're locked in a small cell with no one but yourself and a guard for company."

"Then, the moment of truth...er, well, the person in charge shows up. If you don't want to spend the rest of your life in that cell--which, trust me, you don't, they smell unbelievably strange, get very little daylight, and often have vermin--you need to be able to tell a convincing story, whether true or," she cleared her throat and looked extra-innocent, "augmented, that will get you out of there."

"Sooooo," Vala grinned at them and leaned back on her hands, "Today, I want you to talk your way out of trouble. Either pick a partner or try to convince me. Anything that gets the other person to believe you and let you out of your 'cell'," she made finger quotes and everything, "is good enough for me. Go to it, and remember to do your best!"

"Something that would land you in jail," Vala shrugged.

"Okay. I'm in jail. Now what?"

"You try and get me to let you out."

"Okay. Let me out, please," he said.

"Why should I?" Vala sensed a lack of enthusiasm for this project from young Mister Sheppard.

John thought about that. He didn't know how to argue his way out when he didn't know what he'd been accused of doing.

"Because I'm much more useful outside of jail than inside," he said seriously.

"And the young woman with you? Could you lead us to her?" Vala asked, remembering his response from last week.

Why were women always involved when it was his turn to do a task in this class?

"Right, the woman. Assuming I were free and alive I'm positive I could lead you to her," John said with assurance.

"And the ship? Will she be on the ship or know where it is?" She eyed him.

Oh, great. There was a ship involved. John hoped he guessed correctly that it wasn't a boat type ship.

"She'll know where the ship is. That won't be difficult to get out of her, either. You just have to let me out so I can bring her to you."

Vala considered him. Yeah, he had no idea. "I don't believe you. You don't strike me as the sell out your friends type."

John was annoyed Vala had read him so well.

"Well, I'm generally not, but that girl's not my friend," he said.

"Oh? Who is she then?"

John wasn't sure. He didn't know what girl they were talking about. This would be a lot easier if his teacher wasn't insane.

"She's my enemy!" Yeah, he had nothing.

"And yet you trusted her with your ship?" Vala was having way too much fun.

John didn't know if it even was his ship. He rolled his eyes, hoping he looked annoyed rather than confused. "Of course I didn't trust her with my ship. She's evil! She took it anyway! Now, really, let's go get her and the ship."

"You shouldn't trust a woman," she said, shaking her head sadly, "not unlike how I don't trust you. So sorry."

John was bummed, this assignment was not going well for him.

"What can I do to prove it to you?" he asked.

Vala considered. And then she smirked. This probably wouldn't bode well for John. "You could sing?"

John didn't sing very well, but he tried his best.

"Desert loving in your eyes all the way
If I listen to your lies would you say
I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go, you come and go..."

John paused, wondering if he should continue.

Vala eyed Sheppard. Hmmm. Singing obviously wasn't his strong point. "Enough of that, please. Give me one good reason why I should let you out."

"Because you're hot and we should get it on," he replied.

She winked at him. Much better. "This getting it on? You think you're good enough to get yourself out of jail?"

"Oh yeah! Just give me a chance to show you what I'm talking about..." he got a suggestive look on his face. "If you know what I mean."

"I do, and if you'd read your student handbook, you would know that was an inappropriate suggestion to make to a teacher," Vala told him, "However, it's a very good tactic, and I approve of its use in this situation. But there's still not a reason to leave the cell."
