Freelance Treasure Hunting, Monday, Period 5, Class #4

"Good afternoon, my minions," Vala greeted everyone cheerfully from her customary spot atop the desk. "I'm glad to see you all back after last week's adventures. Last week, you escaped with your treasure, or without your treasure, depending on how things went. However, that doesn't always happen."

She leaned forward and confided, "Sometimes, you get caught. And occasionally even incarcerated, or held by the planetary authorities. This is when the real fun starts, because you have to be able to get yourself out of this situation--the problem is that often, you're locked in a small cell with no one but yourself and a guard for company."

"Then, the moment of truth...er, well, the person in charge shows up. If you don't want to spend the rest of your life in that cell--which, trust me, you don't, they smell unbelievably strange, get very little daylight, and often have vermin--you need to be able to tell a convincing story, whether true or," she cleared her throat and looked extra-innocent, "augmented, that will get you out of there."

"Sooooo," Vala grinned at them and leaned back on her hands, "Today, I want you to talk your way out of trouble. Either pick a partner or try to convince me. Anything that gets the other person to believe you and let you out of your 'cell'," she made finger quotes and everything, "is good enough for me. Go to it, and remember to do your best!"

Rikku nodded. "Yeah. The jewel. That's ... it's like I said before, right? I walked in to see the exhibits, and I didn't even know it was supposed to be closed, because, you know. It wasn't locked. I mean it, it wasn't. And then I bumped a display and I panicked and I totally picked things up and put them back where they belonged. At least, I thought I did. One of them must have fallen into my pocket when the display tipped over. It was so tiny that I didn't notice it, until the guards showed up all 'hey, what are you doing here' and I tried to tell them but then they searched me, and of course I agreed, because why wouldn't I? And then they pull this jewel out and ..."

Rikku stared at Isabel. "You don't suppose ... they couldn't have planted it, could they!? Only it's just ... I don't remember it being there at all, and ... no. They wouldn't. Right?"

"It's 150 carats," she pointed out. "I wouldn't exactly call that tiny. And no, all the guards are completely honorable. No one would plant anything on you."

"What a relief," Rikku said, shaking her head. "It's always scary to think you can't trust the guards, right? I mean, if you can't, who can you trust?"

She knitted her eyebrows together, thinking. "That ... is that what it says, on the sheet? A hundred and fifty? No, no. That can't be right. Something that big wouldn't even fit in my pocket in the first place. Someone must have made a typo on the report, or maybe that's someone else's report. No way was it a hundred and fifty. I only got a glimpse of it when they were taking it out, but ... that would be enormous."

"Something that big is about the size of a large grape. Are your pockets that tiny?" Isabel asked, chuckling a bit.
