Flight and Flying [Friday, 2nd period]

Anakin's mouth was set in a slightly harder line today than normal.

It had nothing to do with the new month.

And he wouldn't explain himself even if it did.

The flight simulator had been reconfigured again--this time to something that should seem a bit more familiar to Earth-based students: The F-16 Flying Falcon.

Anakin clasped his hands behind his back and began speaking. "This is one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this world," he began. "It's good in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards."

He opened the simulator door and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are located in the same place. The F-16 just isn't as sensitive as the starfighter--you'll have to yank harder at the joystick to get the same reaction."

He was completely oblivious to any kind of innuendo that might've been found in that statement. "You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so turns won't be as fast, and if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you might pass out. That's not exactly what I had in mind for today, so please don't do that."

Luke spent most of the class giving his father slightly worried glances. The emotions were battened down a little too tightly to be entirely healthy...

Anakin caught one of the looks. I'm not talking about it, he thought firmly at his son, then ignored him for the rest of the class.

After class, Gavin approached Anakin with a question.

"Mr. Darklighter," Anakin said with a polite nod, tucking his hands up into his sleeves. "How can I help you?"

"Hi," Gavin said slowly. "I have a question to ask you. I said I'd help one of the other students learn to fly some of these sims. Would it be all right if we used the simulator next Tuesday? I won't break anything, I promise."

Anakin gave him a long look before finally nodding. "I can arrange that," he agreed. "I'm assuming you'd prefer something non-Earth based to fly?"

"Yes, sir," he said, nodding. "Otherwise, we'd both spend the time looking at the machine and trying to figure out how to fly things."

"X-Wing configuration, then," Anakin decided. He gave Gavin a small smile. "Any particular planet you'd like as background?"

"Go with the boring planet," Gavin said. "Tatooine. Show her where I'm from."

"And why you're here," Anakin said a little acidly. "I haven't been back in years. I don't miss it. Ever."

"I'm sorry," Gavin said after a moment's pause. "It's my home, boring or not. And I do miss it."

Anakin gave her a small smile but it was clear his heart wasn't in it. "Hi."

He shrugged. "June's not a good month," he replied shortly. "How are you?"

"I'm all right," she says. "It's been quiet lately. Which might be a good thing? I'm not sure."

"Or the Jello dragons are about to return," Anakin agreed with a tiny smile. "Sparring with young Qui-Gon isn't exactly the same thing."

"I didn't have to," Anakin said. "He's not that good yet."

Anakin's standards were a little...insane.

After seeing Anakin's time on the air-to-ground exercise, Z decided to brave his mood and risk asking him a question. "Um, sir?"

"...You did stop before your ears started bleeding, right?" Z asked, thinking of the Gs she'd experienced.

"I did," Anakin said with a nod. "Jedi reflexes and a lack of a screaming Artoo helped, too."
