Freelance Treasure Hunting, Monday, Period 5, Class #3

The class had been ~~handwavily~~ instructed to report to the Danger ~~Room~~ Shop for today's class. Vala was looking especially smug as she played with the dials on the machine and munched on an apple.

"Hello," she greeted them cheerfully, "and welcome to what I'm sure will be an enlightening afternoon for you. Today we will be dealing with how to obtain your treasure or priceless artifact, once you've located it. As I'm sure you probably already know, in many instances, people who collect priceless and historically important artifacts and works of art tend to have elaborate security systems protecting these items and making it more difficult--but, and this is important, not impossible--for an enterprising individual such as one of you to obtain or liberate them."

"So, in today's class, there will be a number of scenarios programmed into the trust computer imaging system here, and your assignment will be to free it from its unfortunate incarceration. Please be aware that there will be a number of alarm systems and surprises along the way. There is also a table with tools," she gestured towards a number of burglary tools that were nicely arrayed on a table at the side of the room in Vanna White-esque fahion, "should you require them. Also, feel free to ask any questions along the way, and either my charming minion-er, assistant-or myself will answer you as soon as we can."

Sitting on a platform in the middle of the room. Tempting, no?

Tempting, yes, but oh-so-suspicious. Turtle stood at the entrance of the room, glancing around to get a good feel for it, tentatively stepping forward and already wincing as though expecting some trap to spring.

It reminded her way too much of some of the movies her dad was always watching.

Turtle might be surprised when no trap sprung from her step forward.

Surprised, but relieved. "Whew," she breathed out, and almost went to lean against a wall to let her heart slow down to a normal pace, but then pulled her hand away before it touched. Could never be too careful. She started tip-toeing toward the platform; her eyes darted upwards a lot to check for, like, ninjas and stuff.

Turtle's eyes went wide. Not good, not good, not good! She drew in a deep breath and fought back the urge to hold back a scream. Once she started moving, though, the scream came out as her arms flailed while she ran toward the platform. Get the statue and flee! That seemed a pretty good tactic right now, and Turtle rushed forward to execute it...STAT!

The statue stood there, seemingly innocent and easy to get in its place on the pedestal.

However, on all sides of the platform were pressure-sensitive triggers that would make it very difficult to get to the statue.

As if Turtle, on, surely, a set course for disaster, would even think about things like that when there were gross, disgusting spiders threatening to get her! Completely handhazardly, Turtle approached the platform.

As soon as Turtle's weight touched the trigger, the stone beneath her foot dropped out from under her, leaving a person-sized hole. Beneath it was a very deep, dark pit.

The sudden shifting and then lack of weight underneath her foot made Turtle stagger back, falling on her butt. She only allowed herself to gawk and panic for a moment before standing back up. She took a second to gaze down into the very deep, dark pit, and then looked over her shoulders to see where the spiders were. Ummm, they...really needed to stop being a distraction. How many were there? She tried to take quick stock while sizing up the hole. Would a similar trap be on the platform? She wondered, desperately. Could she jump it? Maybe some of the spiders would fall in then...

EEeeeeeeeeeppp! This was totally scarier than the stock market.

About ten spiders were still headed in Turtle's general direction, the rest having broken off in search of mates or something sweet. The hole was sized to be jumpable, but anyone doing so would also probably land on the platform with the statue.

The statue. So shiny in all its goldenness. Plus, as solid gold, it would probably fetch a valuable sum at current market prices.

Hmmm....spiders? Or shinies? Spiders? Shinies?

Oh, geez, Turtle was so going to just hire people for crap like this. She took a few steps back quickly from the pit to help get a running start for the leap onto the platform. Death by falling into a pit was better than death by spiders, she figured, because spiders were gross.

Isabel's fairly certain she's seen this movie before. Stepping warily, she started to make her way towards the statue.

Isabel might notice some letters written on the floor in no particular order. This might mean something, or it might not.

Things are supposed to be done in order. So Isabel stepped on the first letter.

If that letter was anything but an "N", a great deal of honey would be released from an alcove above Isabel's head and a hive of bees would be released from the wall.

If it was an "N," nothing happened.

It was a D. Apparently for dumb. Although Isabel was amused by the irony after the conversation she just had (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1384263.html?thread=83535431#t83535431) with Avaris. Determined to get the statue, she continued towards it, moving slowly, trying not to do anything to excite the bees.

The bees advanced on Isabel. One apparently brave soul started buzzing around in circles around her head. Another soon started circling her hand.

The good news was that the floor seemed steady underfoot, though it did creak ominously once or twice.

Isabel was humming, hoping like hell the bees like Rob Thomas. She started moving a tiny bit faster as she got nearer to the statue.

The bees didn't mind Rob Thomas, but were more classic R&B aficianados, not that Isabel would probably know that.

Isabel's motion, combined with the pressure of her foot, caused a bunch of arrows to be released from the wall. They weren't poison-tipped, but they would turn her into a pincushion.

"Oh crap!" Isabel thought as she flung herself to the floor. Now she was sticky with honey and covered with dirt. "This thing better be priceless."

Once the arrows passed over head, she started back towards the statue, moving fast despite the bees.

Apparently the bees had sent out some kind of signal, because more were beginning to show an active interest in Isabel.

Active meaning they stung. Isabel swatted at the bee that stung her arm. "Damnit!" She reached the statue and grabbed at it, knowing all the while that was probably not a good idea.

Tempting, yes. And almost too easy. Which told Eve that it was probably not going to be easy at all.

Eve circled the platform, staying a bit away from it at first.

The pressure of Eve's feet on the flooring opened a panel directly behind her, and a series of double-bladed axes shot out at various levels of her body. If she didn't do something, she would be sliced open at the knees, waist, and neck.
