Freelance Treasure Hunting, Monday, Period 5, Class #2

"Good afternoon," Vala greeted the students cheerfully as they entered, still wearing her customary clothing, "and I hope you all had a profitable weekend. As you know, last week we discussed what treasures are valuable to each culture. This week, we'll begin to learn how to find them."

"The first thing you have to figure out is whether your information is reliable. You can determine this easily if you know your source, but if you don't, you'll have to do a little research. This generally involves the library and looking up information yourself, talking to a village elder about the local legends for the area, or finding a scholar who knows about the myth behind the treasure you're looking for."

"Once you have your reliable information, or information you are willing to believe is reliable--not nearly the same thing, in case you were wondering--if you're lucky, you will have a map that tells you where the treasure is. If you don't, you'll have to come up with a map of your own, based on the information you've gathered from other sources. This map can either be of the terrain, generally including landmarks such as temples, statues, or landing fields, or physical features such as rocks, streams, and mountains. You want a map that uses items that won't erode or move over the course of time, because it makes it easier not to get lost. These, of course, are more expensive than the regular maps and you should take that into account when you are budgeting for your expedition."

"As a last resort when it comes to figuring out where you are, there is also the option of celestial navigation--using the stars to pinpoint your location. That's all well and good on this planet, but on other planets, the stars won't be familiar and the constellations will be missing. Don't forget that, or you could end up lost in a desert when you're meant to be in the woods, having lunch with a charming man and his mother. Er, not that that ever happened, of course," she added quickly.

"For this class, I'll ask you to explain your favorite way of verifying information, and then I'm going to let you loose with the maps--you have one of Fandom, and one of the night sky in the northern hemisphere of this planet. If you have a town map, I would like you to explore with it--mark what is at each location, or pick one location, and write down something valuable that you find there, so you can find it again. If you're using the star maps, I would like you to go out at night and attempt to find as many constellations as you can. As a tip for those of you who are interested in dating, this is an excellent activity for that sort of thing. Please mark them off as you find them."

[ooc: OCD is up! in a second. Handwaving is, as always, possible, if not as much fun.]

Okay, Vala had already mentioned breaking the law in her very first class, so she was cool and probably wanted the whole story.

"Okay, so, about a month or two ago, a bunch of us were up at like 5 in the morning for no reason and we decided to pull a mutiny. Kinda against rules and tyranny, and then clothes got added to the list because there were a couple of hot guys there, and so some people got naked and the rest of us were wearing something skimpy instead and we broke into the Vice-Principal's office and decorated it with glitter and posters of boy bands. And left him a bright orange robe and told him it was a good color for spring." There was a pause here while she giggled madly and caught her breath, which wasn't a very good combination.

"Okay, so, uh, one of those guys is in my cabin, and we were all, we should do it again! And Hades heard about it and was very TRY IT AND DIE so that meant we had to. And this time I brought my boyfriend so I didn't get dumped for hanging out with naked guys and then a turtle showed up to join us and we wandered around the preserve first waving to people and being all, uh, dressed skimpy in public, which is kinda fun." Another breath.

"So we found Hades' office and this time we had hot pink silly string and little weird figurines of little kids and bunnies and kittens and posters like SOMEBUNNY WUVS YOU and this movie about pretty princess ponies on parade that we had set up to play in Spanish with French subtitles and there was more glitter and then he showed up and we got so, so busted. But it was great. And I think John Crichton got pictures, 'cause he promised me he'd go try to get some, and there were naked guys and you know what? Detention was so so so worth it."

"Hooray!" Rikku bounced. "And we haven't really thought about it. Uh, I don't know that we were gonna do it again, except I told Dawn I'd call her, so I bet we probably will sooner or later. And it's usually Hades 'cause it makes his hair change colors, except this time it didn't."

"Oh, and, uh, the assignment?" There was a hint of a blush. "Uh, if people go out on a date-thing, to find stars? Won't they, uh." Okay, more than a hint. "That doesn't sound like you'd really find the stars, exactly, uh, with most people and dates." Unless they were really abnormal. Maybe they were.

"Right," Rikku said with a grin. "I should totally get on that assignment, then. Homework is important."

"Oh! And, uh, we're never doing the mutiny again, but if we did, you know of anybody who deserves to be a target?"

"The anarchy-deal sounds kinda mutiny-ish, though. But still. Might as well make the most of it. Although with hot naked guys, really ..." Rikku blushed. "I mean. You know."

Rikku grinned. "Oh, I never go naked for the mutinies. I let the guys do that. I mean, they offered, but ... that doesn't mean they get to see anything, you know?"

Rikku laughed at that. "Oh, man! Pops just said to punch people. I never even thought of flashing them. I gotta remember that."
