Glitter [Thursday, third period]

Out by the main campfire, there were a few tables set up, and a slim, nervous-looking brunette standing in front of them.

"Morning!" she said cheerfully. "If you want coffee, there's a ton, and I brought doughnuts? I hope that's okay with you guys. If you want me to bring different stuff next week, let me know."

She gripped her own coffee cup, and smiled. "Um, so hi. I'm Rory, and I know...most of you. And welcome to the workshop that has the really long name because I was in a creative mood when I submitted it, so we're just going to call it Glitter, okay? And this workshop is just going to be about making ordinary things more sparkly. Because sparkles are never a bad thing, right? Unless you get glitter in your hair. That stuff makes friends with your scalp or something and just never washes out, so be careful. "

She cleared her throat. "Um, so this is going to be pretty easy today. I want everyone to introduce yourselves, say your age and the grade you'll be in the fall, favorite color, and...favorite pizza topping. And then after that, I've got some shirts for you guys," she pointed to a table laden with glitter of all colors, glitter glue pens, puff paint, feathers, hot glue ~~and all kinds of moddable goodies~~ and a neat stack of white T-shirts. "You can do whatever you want to them, okay? Just be creative, and they're yours to keep."

"Right! So, introductions." She waved. "My name's Rory Gilmore, I'm eighteen and just graduated, so I'll be a freshman at Yale in the fall. Well, technically freshman with sophomore credits, but that's irrelevant. My favorite color is blue, and I like just about anything on my pizza, but pepperoni is my favorite."

She looked around, smiling. "Who wants to go next?"

"I thought we had fun," Luke said, "but she has a lunch date with Johnny today, so maybe I'm wrong."

Rory frowned. "I'll get my beating stick," she offered.

Luke shook his head. "It's okay," he said sadly. "It's not like we're exclusive or something."

He'd learned that term from Isabel.

"Doesn't matter, if your feelings are hurt," she said quietly.

"I haven't talked to her yet," Luke said, "so I'm not sure if my feelings should be hurt." His eyes glanced over at the basket. "What's in that?"

"Stuff," Rory said shortly.

Luke raised an eyebrow at her tone. "What kind of stuff?" he asked.

Anything to get away from the topic of him and Tori...

"Stuff your father sent."

Rory's eyes flashed.

Luke almost stepped back. "What'd he do this time?" he asked.

"Don't want to talk about it," she said quietly.

Luke's eyes went flat. "That bad, huh," he muttered. He reached out to touch Rory's shoulder. "I can take the basket with me if that'll make it easier," he offered.

"No, I'll keep it," she said. "I just...he...this was the worst yet."

This would make class fun tomorrow, Luke thought with an inward sigh. "I still owe him a kick to the head," he said aloud. "Do I need to add on to that?"

"Beat him with sticks," she murmured. "And then wait, and he'll say that Rose hits with sticks better."

"...huh?"

"Nothing," she muttered absently.

Like he was going to let her get away with that.

Luke crossed his arms over his chest and looked at her. "I can't help if I don't know what's wrong," he said quietly.

"Okay, so we were flying, and he took the controls, and I said something that made him mad," she blushed at that, "and he started flying faster and it was really scary and I told him to stop and he said 'Rose wouldn't mind' and so then I slapped him and took the controls and flew us home and now we're not speaking."

Luke's mouth dropped open. "What an idiot," he breathed. "I'm sorry."

She shrugged. "I'm done."

For a split second Luke looked absolutely crushed but he recovered quickly.

"Fresh starts are good," he said quietly, moving a little closer. "I'm still sorry it ended that way."

Rory's lower lip trembled slightly and she dropped her head against his shoulder.

It felt so much more real, hearing him say it.

Luke wrapped his arms around her and gave her a hug. "It'll get better," he promised.

"Can't get worse," she murmured.

Luke held on a little more tightly. "Are you sure there's nothing I can do?"
