Lunch - Monday - 5/14

The Chef looked positively giddy about working near the cabins. He loved the great outdoors. Das Schnitzel was the outdoors-y type too. She was in a corner whittling...something.

"Guud murneeng stoodents! I em su gled tu be-a beck et vurk! In zee ooootduurs! Veet noo stoodents!"

"They aren't allowed to kill us though," Buffy hastened to reassure Charlie. "Just give us detention."

"I'm almost afraid to ask what that's like," Charlie said, looking disturbed. "And the furniture is alive? How does that work, some kind of, I don't know. Weird scientific breakthrough?"

"I don't know, but according to the radio, Seely has detention, like, all the time, so you should ask him," Buffy said. "And I dunno how it's alive. It only happens sometimes. A girl down my hallway had her door come alive and refuse to let her back in to her room. It was a really mean door too!"

"Okay, Seely," Charlie said, determined to find that guy and ask. "And-- wow. I think this is the first thing someone's mentioned where I just... yeah, I have no point of reference for that at all." She sat there and boggled for a minute, then asked something that had been bugging her: "How come no one knows about all the craziness here? Wouldn't you think it would make the news?"

Buffy shook her head. "First of all, who'd believe you? And second, I think the island sort of protects itself about that kind of thing. Don't ask me how."

"Hunh." Which was really reassuring-- she'd been a little worried about using her real name this close to D.C., but it sounded like no one would find those records here. "Okay, point. I'm not even sure those Believe It Or Not websites would have anything on this place. It's good to know, though." Hastily she added, "Because I like it here already. I'd hate for it to go away."

"It's pretty cool, isn't it?" Buffy grinned. "No one thinks I'm weird just 'cause I'm a Slayer!" She paused. "Of course, I don't think I've ever seen any vampires here..."

"A what?" Charlie's eyes got huge again. "Vampires?!"

Okay, right there was a danger she hadn't expected....

"Yup. I'm the Chosen one, destined to kill vampires and other evil things. Well, a Chosen one," she corrected herself. "Mel is a slayer too, but she's from the future."

"A Chosen One is a Slayer. And you kill people?" Charlie's not sure she'd want vampires to live, but wow, that's hardcore. Not that she can talk. "Oh, hey, is she from Alec's future?"

"Not people! Just evil things," Buffy corrected. "And we're not allowed to kill fellow students. I think it's a rule or something."

She thought about Charlie's other question. "Um, I don't think she is? I don't think Alec's world has Slayers."

"Good rule to have," Charlier said weakly, because, wow, they had to make it a rule? Oh boy. "So, vampires aren't people? Just monsters with fangs?" She started to relax again. "And are they camping out without amenities in Mel's future too? I'm starting to seriously think about who I should be voting for, if all the futures end up bad."

"Vampires used to be people, but when they've become vampires they're not any more. I don't think all the futures are bad," Buffy said, but she sounded a little doubtful.

"Do they still die if you set them on fire?" Charlie wondered.

Not that she was going to be using her firestarting. At all. But, if she got cornered by a vampire, maybe, to scare it away...

"Good. Oh, do any of the futures have spaceships?"

"Should do," Buffy nodded. "Or you can stake them through the heart or cut their heads off, that works too."

She beamed. "River's future has spaceships! She has one named Acorn, but I think she took it when she went home for the summer."

"Good news on both counts," Charlie said, looking relieved. "Sorry, this place is kind of intimidating, you know? I was just worried about mosquitos and not making friends when I got here. All the rest of it-- I know I'm going to forget it all and have to be told stuff twice before it sinks in."

Buffy grinned. "Don't worry. Once something weird's happened to you a couple of times, it'll sink in, trust me."

Charlie smiled at Buffy in relief, then said thoughtfully, "So, who does the choosing for you to be the Slayer? Is it like a religious thing?"
