Ares addressed the class as they came in. "Now, I'm sure you're all still missing your brats, so today we're going to take things easy, and have a bit of a review session in anticipation of our upcoming final. Which will be hard and arduous, and you will fail if you don't adequately prepare."

"Chocolate?" Walter pulled a Snickers bar from his book bag.

He'd learned something from Nadia. Possibly not the right something, but something.

She leans towards him and whispers, "Is there something wrong with it?"

"Hey, are you getting lippy?" Yeah, it wasn't pms but it was close.

Walter shrugged at her and set the bar on his desk. "Ever had anything but American chocolate?"

Really, Nadia was his girlfriend. Female moodiness didn't faze him.

She looked down at that Snickers bar that she really wanted, then back at him, "Uh, yes."

Annette assumed there was a point to that question.

"Then you should know what's wrong with it." Walter tossed the chocolate bar on her desk.

"American chocolate, cigarettes, and tea." He made a face. "But most of the cooking is better," he admitted.

She had never thought of chocolate quite like that. Sure, some was definitely better than others...but she never pondered it.

"Don't smoke. Not an issue." Best to mention that. "Don't cook either cause I can't." Who cares though, right? It was just cooking. "You're right about the tea and chocolate." She picked up the candy bar and turned it over, checking out the ingredients.

Hey, he was carrying the aforementioned American chocolate in his bookbag, so he couldn't hate it that much.

Or it was just that he was a walking Hoover.

"I'd offer you cooking lessons, but they'd have to be done quickly." Although it might satisfy his curiosity about why she was in such a mood.

"Ppft." That is what Annette thought about cooking. Okay, she might be a little interested.

"Quick cooking lessons? Is there such a thing?" She frowned. "...and why quickly?"

He still didn't understand why so many students here were disinterested in feeding themselves properly. Then again, most of them didn't have to eat the way he did.

"Quick because I'm leaving next week after finals."

That took her by surprise. But Pippi leaving took her by surprise too and she didn't even get to say good-bye.

"Why?"

"I'm going home to go back to work. The war's nearly over." He hoped. "But there are always more vampires."

"Right. Vampires." Annette looked a little unsure. "Are you sure that is such a good idea? I mean yay! for home, but you're safe here...right?" And there is Nadia to think about!

Walter gave her a dubious look. "Is anyone actually safe here? And it doesn't matter anyway. Why should I be safe when no one at home is? And I'm better able to protect myself than most people."

"Good point." She spared a glance at Steerpike whom she had been forced to defend herself against. It might have been her fault but she totally didn't see it that way at all. Didn't even think it.

"Because of the wires? And you sort of answered your own question. No one is really safe anywhere are they? So you are going home and leaving everyone behind, especially certain special people..." Yes, that was Annette caring for Nadia.

Walter could have lived without the reminder from Annette. He was well aware of whom he was leaving behind.

"Yes, because of the wires. And yes, I have to leave Nadia here."

She didn't mean to remind him per say, was just curious is all. She certainly didn't mean to make him feel bad if he did feel bad.

"I see." And. "I see." And that was just going to suck for Nadia, she was sure of it.

Walter shrugged and pulled another chocolate bar out of his bookbag. He really didn't see how she could "see" because he's fifteen and he's the only one in the universe to ever have to make hard choices.

"You'll be here into the summer, then?"

Uh, Annette should tell him the story about how/why she had had to come to Fandom. But, she didn't talk about that story much. It...didn't end well.

"I will. I won't go home if I don't have to. Maybe for a week's vacation but that's about it. My parents are...older." Which was a very nice way of putting it she thought.

She smiled warmly, "I did have a little one and he was so cute. Unfortunately he answered the phone when my mom called and well, the whole grandmother thing didn't go over so well." An understatement if there ever was one.

"Did you have a little one, Walter?"

Walter laughed quietly at the image of her parents getting a long-distance taste of Fandom.

"Yes, I did. Bailey. She looks so much like her mum."

"Bailey. I've always liked that name. Was she sweet?" Annette couldn't quit grinning; Sebastian had been so much fun, much more than she had ever imagined having a child would be.

"Do you mind me asking who the mom is?"

Walter pulled out a photograph (http://userpic.livejournal.com/60688681/12636646) of a muddy little girl and passed it to Annette.

"She was..." He smiled fondly and shrugged. He'd never thought a seven year old (pardon, seven and a half) could get him wrapped around her finger so easily. "Doesn't she look like Nadia?"
