Traditional Fairy Tales, Class Fourteen (04/16)

Monday, April 16, Period Two

A large projection screen decorates one wall of the classroom, and there's a nice assortment of pastries, muffins, popcorn and pretzels on the table in the center of the room.

"Good morning everyone. We were scheduled to have a test today, but I felt it was hardly fair to give you a test the week before finals. So instead, we'll be watching a film that's full of the classic fairy tale elements - The Ogre and the Ass and it always said that omg. You'll probably recognize some of them from the stories we've read, although you'll find they've been turned a bit on their side. Please remember that next week you'll be making your project presentations, so I'll be available in my office tomorrow, or after class today, for any questions."

[ooc: Anyone with kidlets is welcome to bring them to class, just please check with me OOC before telling Aziraphale exactly where they came from (so I can avoid contradicting some preplay). Please wait for OCD is up. Entertain me!]

Having passed Aiden to Cedric, Jack had Ananda curled in his lap. She wasn't watching the movie, though; the other students and kids seemed to be far more interesting. "No eavesdropping on private stuff," Jack muttered in her ear. "At least pretend to watch the movie."

She just smiled as enigmatically as a seven year old could, and turned towards the screen.

When River noticed Jack arriving with Ananda - and another kid, but she wasn't bothered about him - she considered hiding under the desk. She didn't however, just glanced at Jack and the girl.

Jack smiled at River, but he was a bit uncertain. She'd left Ananda in the common room, and the kid had been pretty upset. He could understand why she didn't want a kid in her room, and in her head, but she could have brought Ananda down to him.

Sensing his thoughts clearly, River stared down at her desk. It hadn't been a nice thing to do. She had hurt Ananda and she knew it too well, having felt it herself. Sighing, she rose from her chair and moved to sit down next to Jack and Ananda. "Morning," she said, biting her lip, avoiding the gaze of both of them.

Jack settled Ananda a bit more comfortably, wincing a little when she stared up at him and whispered, "You made mommy feel bad."

He could see that for himself, and he held out a hand to River. "Sorry. Good morning, and she was fine."

River took his hand and squeezed it, then looked at Ananda. Morning, she said in her mind, knowing the girl would hear. Slowly she reached out a hand towards her.

Ananda watched her and, after a quick look up at her dad, reached out and squeezed her mom's hand, even though what she wanted to do was hop into her lap and hug her. "I'm sorry I hurt you. I'll try and be quiet in my head."

Touching made the thoughts even stronger, but River remained still, staying calm. Sorry I left you alone. It hadn't been fair. She tried smiling towards Ananda.

Ananda beamed at her mom, trying really hard to not be loud. It was easier with dad here. It's okay. Even though it really hadn't been, not last night. Daddy came and found me and took me to his room.

River glanced at Jack. "Thank you. Just couldn't..." She shook her head, then gently stroked Ananda's hair.

"It's okay, River. I understand." And he did, mostly, sending warm thoughts her way. "If it happens again, bring her to me, okay?"

Ananda slipped off his lap and over to her mom, slowly crawling into her lap, still being as quiet as she could.

River awkwardly tried to hold the girl. Luckily Ananda was more used to this and just wrapped her arms around Mommy's neck. Nervously stroking her back, River glanced at Jack again.

Jack smiled reassuringly and shifted closer so he could slip an arm around her. "It's okay, River," he said quietly. You're doing wonderfully. And she loves you. He patted Ananda gently on the back.

River leaned against Jack's shoulder, still holding Ananda. When the girl was happy River felt it so strongly, and without thinking about it, she smiled. This was extremely odd, but finally it didn't hurt or frighten her.

Jack grinned when he saw River's smile. "I know this is weird, but it doesn't have to be bad. And she's awfully cute."

He tweaked Ananda's nose and she giggled, hiding her face against her mom.

Then River giggled too, finally looking deeper into Ananda's mind. "In her reality we live on Serenity," she told Jack. "Working. Simon's there too." She giggled again. "Plotting to take over the ship."

"I bet we'll do it, too." He kept stroking River's back, leaning closer so he could do rest one hand on Ananda head. "That sounds like a good life, and she's obviously happy."

Ananda opened an eye and looked at Jack. "Can't take over Serenity, it would upset Uncle Simon."

"We wouldn't want to do that," he laughed. "So we'll be good. I promise."

River looked at him with a raised eyebrow, then giggled. And giggled some more.

"Hey! It could happen!" Not likely, but it was possible. "Maybe."

Then Ananda joined in the giggling too, and looked up at her Mom. He really believes that?

Evie... boggled. No other word for it. She'd seen quite a few kids around, and had the general idea of what was happening, but still.
