Library, Monday [4-16]

Yomiko had noticed a certain trend around town on her way to work that morning, so when she got to the library she set to work kidproofing it. Because good Lord, they were everywhere.

First, she set out an assortment of kids' books in a variety of languages on one of the tables near the door.

Susie was her mother's daughter. She could sniff out a library darn near anywhere.

Her eyes widened as she saw all the books that were available. She wanted to rush right over to touch them but, being her father's daughter, she knew politeness came first.

So she went over to the main counter, got on tiptoe so that she could peer over it, and waited to be noticed by a librarian.

Yomiko peered over the counter. "Can I help you, young lady?"

"Hello," Susie said. She gave a curtsey, because that's what one did when being respectful to someone new. Granted from behind a desk one might only see a red head bobbing as the curtsey was done. Then it was back to the attempt to peer over the counter. "May I visit your books, please?"

"Yes, you may," Yomiko told her, charmed by this polite little girl. "There are some books specially for kids on the table over there." She pointed helpfully to them.

"Yay! Thank you!" Susie started to go over to the book pile, then remembered herself. She carefully placed her stuffed dog down on the floor, then gave another curtsey. "Princess Susannah Chana Rosenberg Pevensie, at your service."

Yomiko gave her a little curtsey right back. "I'm Miss Readman. I'm the librarian here. I'm very pleased to meet you, Princess Susannah." It was so cute when kids play-acted royalty.

"Pleased to meet you too, Miss Readman." Susie picked Stanley up from the floor. "This is Stanley. He can't read but I can read to him real quiet. That's how he learns his words."

"That's very kind of you," Yomiko told her. "I'm sure Stanley appreciates it."

"I promise to be nice to the books," Susie said. She then lowered her voice to a whisper. "I'll speak Library."

"Okay," Yomiko whispered back. "If you need any help with anything, just come and get me, all right?" And then it occurred to her to ask, "Does your mommy or daddy know you're here?"

"Alex is taking care of me," Susie said. Of course Alex had made the misfortune of blinking, which is why his sister had been able to scoot off on her own, but Susie felt that these were mere technical details.

"And who's Alex?" Yomiko asked her.

"My big brother!" Susie said, proudly. She regarded having a big brother in much the same way some people regarded having a Porche, which was to say it was a thing to brag about.

"Yeah? And where is he?" As she waited for the answer, Yomiko wrote 'Susannah is in here' on a piece of paper and went to stick it to the library door in case any frantic parents came by.

"I don't know," Susie admitted. "I turned around and he was gone. Or maybe invisible."

"Maybe he fell through the floor," Yomiko suggested. "I knew a lady who could do that once."

"Reeeeeeally?" Susie looked riveted. "Was she a witch? My mommy's a witch and she's very nice and not at all like some witches who are very mean and set bad examples."

That last bit might have sounded like rote memory on Susie's part. With good reason.

"No, she wasn't a witch," Yomiko told her. "Her name was Nancy and she was my best friend." For about ten minutes.

"Was she a dog?" Susie asked. "Doggies sometimes dig and then they're in the ground."

"No, she was a lady, like I said," Yomiko told Susannah.

"I'll be a Lady when I grow up," Susie said. "Then I'll have extra pretty dresses."

"I bet you will!" Yomiko said cheerily. "Lady of where?"

Then she made new 'No eating in the library' 'Be quiet in the library!' and 'FORMS: NOT FOR EATING' signs with illustrative clipart and put them up.

Then she added a chain and padlock to the doors to Special Collections, just in case.

She wondered if she should have a story hour...

While Luke was in Conflict Resolution with Nik, Rory decided to take her tiny brats down to the library and see if they could find something entertaining.

So that was why she carefully sidled in the door, carrying a small girl with her thumb in her mouth, and followed by a little blond boy.

"I wanna play video games! Books are boring!" Brantley shouted.

"Brantley! We are in a library! You will be quiet or you'll have time out," Rory hissed before shooting Yomiko an apologetic look. "Sorry."

"Oh, what a sadly misguided child," Yomiko said. "I blame the parents."

"Blame the father," Rory said, glaring at Brantley. "His mother's an avid reader."

"Dad says books are for ugly people," Brantley said.

"Your father is sadly misguided," Yomiko told him. And then, wincing as she said it because what a cliche, she added, "Books unlock doors in your imagination!"

Brantley shrugged. "That's what money is for."

It was like they were speaking two different languages. "Yes, you need money to buy books."

At lunch, no one but the librarian, the library aides, and any inexplicable kidlets they might have should be here. The rest of you shoo.

On further thought, Yomiko decided she would make one of the library aides do story hour. At least one of them had to like kids, right?

Short of padding the corners of the tables, Yomiko was fresh out of ideas, so she spent sixth period playing Spider Solitaire on the computer.

During seventh period, Yomiko tidied up any messes wee children might have left behind over the course of the day so she could go home at closing.

So we don't fall off the post.
