Revolutions: Week 12, Period 5

Back in the classroom this week, Aly waited until the majority of students were present before breaking off her conversation with a dark-haired man sporting a large eyepatch that covered his left eye and most of that side of his face. She smiled at the class, eyes checking off who was there, then took a seat on her desk to speak.

"Afternoon, everybody. First thing, I'll remind all of you that your exam is in two weeks. No, you aren't going to have to overthrow a country to pass." She grinned. "At least probably not."

"For the rest of the class, you'll not be actively revolting - I hope-" she threw a wink at Mustang. "But General Roy Mustang has agreed to speak to this class today. He has quite a bit of experience in little matters like working within the system - and military - to change it. Two things that I'm less than familiar with," Aly added with a wry smile.

Recognising his cue Mustang stepped forward. "As Miss Aly has already indicated," he paused for a moment and looked down at his blue uniform, "and you quite possibly might have guessed from my uniform, I am a military officer. Even if she had my rank wrong and I am merely an enlisted man, not a General. My country, Amestris, used to be under martial law. Our Fuhrer, King Bradley, was both head of the state and the military. I am certain that you are all aware of the possible consequences such a condition can have."

His features hardened, giving little insight into what exactly he was thinking, but he kept his tone soft as he reminded himself that he was dealing with children. "Fuhrer Bradley used our military for his own personal agenda. A costly one at that. He used a science meant to help the people to destroy an entire population. Good officers were forced to perform acts they could have never imagined. You probably can imagine that this is a hard situation to change and I hope that none of you will ever be in this position. There is no right way of acting or changing the government around you. I can't offer you a 12 step program, but I can offer a few insights hopefully that will help even in situations less grave than the one I have just described," Mustang continued.

"We are each just one person. We can only do so much and influence so many people and yet that is the key. In a world where you can't trust the person above you, you will have to surround yourself with people who you can rely on. Don't assume that you can deal with everything on your own, but trust in them and give them your back. Keep them safe and expect that they in turn keep the people around them safe. Don't trust easily, but when you know that you can rely on them, do so fully and give them the chance to create room around you to come up with a plan to rise to the top." He paused and glanced around the room. "I think that this is the best advice I can give you, but if there are any more questions that you would like to ask, I'll be more than willing to answer."

"You are?" Alphonse sounded a little disappointed. "Oh, well," he trailed off awkwardly; even if he'd explained the nature of this school many times over to newcomers, it felt strange, somehow, to have to do so for Roy. "I guess you could say this school's very, um, unique in a strange way."

"So I have come to notice," Roy said, quite possibly thinking of his earlier conversation with Jamie. "From what I gathered it's a sort of crossroad between different worlds?"

"Right," Alphonse confirmed with a nod. "There's people from all different sorts of places and times. The time thing includes our own world."

Roy frowned, quickly trying to process what Alphonse was saying. "You're from my future?"

"Ah, yes," he answered. "I mean-- only by about two years," Alphonse added quickly; it had to be, by the sound of it. Even staying in Dublith was a while before he ever came to Fandom.

If it had been anyone but Alphonse telling him this, he might have had a harder time to believe it, he knew that the boy had no reason to lie however and he nodded slowly. "How did you come here?" he asked after briefly wondering if it was against some sort of law to ask about the future.

"It was Aunt Pinako's idea," Alphonse said, shoving his hands into his pockets. "After I came back to Resembool, and by ~~massively handwaved portal-hopping means~~ decided to send me here."

"It doesn't seem like such a bad place to be," Roy suggested gently even as he still had trouble imagining Alphonse anywhere without his older brother.

"It's not at all," Alphonse replied with a fond smile. "I like it a lot, here."

Roy returned the smile, not sure why that was reassuring even if this wasn't the Alphonse he knew. "I'd imagine if all classes have interesting topics like this one."

"They're different," Alphonse said. "But the ones I've taken have been fun so far. I can't say there's anything about this school that goes by what we consider normal standards."

"No," he agreed. "One of the students in this class was able to make duplicates of himself. As long as he wasn't a humonculi..."

"That sounds like Jamie," Alphonse replied, trying to sound assuring. He then shook his head, "No, there aren't any of those here." Nevermind the only one he knew now was Wrath, who didn't seem bad-- now, at least. He's heard they were bad news, anyway. "A lot of people here have all sorts of weird and crazy abilities, too."

"As do you," Roy pointed out. "From what I've gathered alchemy doesn't seem to be very common here."

Alphonse made a slight look. "It's not," he answered, knowing Roy was right about the first part of his statement. "Mostly, no one's ever heard of it before."

"That gives you the advantage," Roy said. It was hard to stop thinking along such terms.

When Alphonse thought about it, he had to agree. "It has; it's been very useful when I needed it, around here."

"Good," Roy looked satisfied with the answer. "I'm glad to see that you found a place here."

Alphonse nodded. "Yeah. I'm really surprised to see you here, Colonel--" he cut himself short, mentally hitting himself for the slip. "Um, I didn't think I'd run into you around here."

"Neither did I," Roy assured Alphonse, once again ignoring the slip. "But then I didn't know about this place until I received a letter inviting me to come speak here. Perhaps I should tell your aunt Pinako about it once I return," he suggested.

Alphonse paused briefly, before remembering it wouldn't be his Pinako. Not that there was anything bad he was keeping from her, but, like most people, he didn't ever say the details about most of the happenings because he wasn't sure what she would think. Though, despite not remembering Mustang during the years they traveled, Alphonse had a feeling he could trust Roy to say the right thing, so he nodded. "Yeah," he said. "If you go to Risembool-- I know it's way off course from where you usually go..."

"I can call her," Roy said. He might possibly have a habit of checking once in a while anyway. "Not that I have a telephone up North, but I was thinking of dropping by Central before going back." Maybe, he hadn't made up his mind yet.

"Oh, Central; I haven't been there in a long time, myself," Alphonse idly commented. "It's too bad you're only staying for a short while, but you probably have a lot more things to do back home."

"Life of an enlisted man are a lot more quiet," Roy admitted. "How long will you be staying here?"

"I don't plan on leaving anytime soon," Alphonse answered. "I'd like to stay for as long as I can."
