fandomhigh | Revolutions: Week 12, Period 5

Back in the classroom this week, Aly waited until the majority of students were present before breaking off her conversation with a dark-haired man sporting a large eyepatch that covered his left eye and most of that side of his face. She smiled at the class, eyes checking off who was there, then took a seat on her desk to speak.

"Afternoon, everybody. First thing, I'll remind all of you that your exam is in two weeks. No, you aren't going to have to overthrow a country to pass." She grinned. "At least probably not."

"For the rest of the class, you'll not be actively revolting - I hope-" she threw a wink at Mustang. "But General Roy Mustang has agreed to speak to this class today. He has quite a bit of experience in little matters like working within the system - and military - to change it. Two things that I'm less than familiar with," Aly added with a wry smile.

Recognising his cue Mustang stepped forward. "As Miss Aly has already indicated," he paused for a moment and looked down at his blue uniform, "and you quite possibly might have guessed from my uniform, I am a military officer. Even if she had my rank wrong and I am merely an enlisted man, not a General. My country, Amestris, used to be under martial law. Our Fuhrer, King Bradley, was both head of the state and the military. I am certain that you are all aware of the possible consequences such a condition can have."

His features hardened, giving little insight into what exactly he was thinking, but he kept his tone soft as he reminded himself that he was dealing with children. "Fuhrer Bradley used our military for his own personal agenda. A costly one at that. He used a science meant to help the people to destroy an entire population. Good officers were forced to perform acts they could have never imagined. You probably can imagine that this is a hard situation to change and I hope that none of you will ever be in this position. There is no right way of acting or changing the government around you. I can't offer you a 12 step program, but I can offer a few insights hopefully that will help even in situations less grave than the one I have just described," Mustang continued.

"We are each just one person. We can only do so much and influence so many people and yet that is the key. In a world where you can't trust the person above you, you will have to surround yourself with people who you can rely on. Don't assume that you can deal with everything on your own, but trust in them and give them your back. Keep them safe and expect that they in turn keep the people around them safe. Don't trust easily, but when you know that you can rely on them, do so fully and give them the chance to create room around you to come up with a plan to rise to the top." He paused and glanced around the room. "I think that this is the best advice I can give you, but if there are any more questions that you would like to ask, I'll be more than willing to answer."

No matter how many times he'd get on the subject, Alphonse didn't think he'd ever be able to fully wrap his mind around the whole alternate timeline and beings thing. Especially when it was about someone who, in a way, was right in front of him. "I haven't spoken to, ah, you, in a really long time... but I'll be sure to do so if I need the help."

"It doesn't matter how long ago it was," Roy assured Alphonse.

"Ah, thank you," Alphonse replied. "I really do appreciate all your help, from before and now."

Roy shook his head. "There's no need," he assured him and hesitated for a moment. "I don't suppose you found anything from Edward?" he asked quietly.

Alphonse looked up quickly; he should have suspected such a question would come up eventually, but somehow, it struck him with surprise. He averted his eyes towards the ground, almost feeling a bit guilty. "No," Alphonse said in the same tone of voice. He didn't want to say anything about his brother being at Fandom at one point. "There hasn't been anything."

Roy reached out, briefly touching the boy's shoulder. He wanted to apologise, but he knew that wouldn't change anything. "It will come."

"Yeah," Alphonse said, wanting to agree. "He'll come home, eventually. He has to."

"You better make sure you have lots to tell him by then," Roy said with a small smile.

After a brief silence, Alphonse nodded. If anything, there was too much he wanted Edward to tell, too. "I definitely will," he replied. "To be honest, I already do."

That was a concept Roy wasn't entirely unfamiliar with an he nodded. "I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing the same."

"I hope so," Alphonse said, simply. While he had an entire swarm of thoughts regarding the subject, he wasn't sure how to put them into words. That, and even if this was Roy, Alphonse never liked to push his own problems on others.

"I'm certain," Roy said quietly before continuing in a brighter tone. "If I end up coming this way again in the future, I will make certain to drop in on you."

"Oh," Alphonse looked up again with a thankful smile. "Yes, of course. It's nice to see a familiar face."

"Especially when you aren't expecting it," he agreed.

"Mm-hmm," Alphonse agreed. "I haven't even been back home in a long time. As much as I like it here, I miss it there, too."

"Aren't school holidays coming up?" Roy asked, honestly not knowing how that was supposed to work at Fandom.

"Oh!" Alphonse looked thoughtful, now that the idea hit him. "We do have a break at the end of the semester. Maybe I should see if I could plan anything, then."

Roy smiled. "I'm sure they'd be glad to see you."

Alphonse smiled again, turning up and spotting a clock. "Ah-- I should probably let you go, instead of taking up the time you have."

"You're not taking up anything," Roy assured Alphonse. "It was good saying you."

"It was good to see you, too," Alphonse said, beginning to turn to leave. He didn't really want to, but he knew there was limited time. He knew the possibility of it happening wasn't very likely, but he couldn't help but add, "See if you can come by again!"

Roy was slightly surprised by the remark, he smiled and nodded in reply. "Take care, Alphonse."

Alphonse waved, backing away from the doorway to head back down the hall.
