Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You, Class Twelve [Period 5, Thursday]

Sprawled in his throne, Ares looked at the class. "The Flying Spaghetti Monster," he intoned solemnly. "Have you been touched by His Noodly Appendage?"

He tensed under her touch, his suspicions flaring to life, but he shoved them down. It was Sam. Until he saw proof, he wouldn't believe she'd hurt him like that. "No, I need to be here," he said, making himself relax and smile at her. "And I need to tell you about Cedric."

"Cedric? What happened to Cedric?" What the hell was going on with this week?

Jack lifted his head and looked at Sam, some of the helplessness he'd felt showing in his face. "His magic is gone," he said, very quietly. "And he's terrified."

"Oh, no," Sam breathed, horrified at the idea, "Is there anything I can do?"

You've done enough. He caught the words before they could escape, countered them with his faith in her, and pushed all the confusion away. "I don't know. Come to dinner tonight? Izzy's making chilli. He's going to be there. Let him know he's safe? He thinks something's coming for him, something he can't stop."

"Of course," Sam agreed immediately, thinking again that it was too bad she couldn't walk around armed during whatever was going on. "Where and when?"

"~~Handwavy time~~, in the fourth floor common room." And he could watch them together, Sam and Cedric, see if they gave anything away. "Thanks." He was exhausted, and fighting these suspicions was making his head ache, and he didn't mean to open his mouth and ask, voice barely above a whisper, "You wouldn't deliberately hurt me, right?"

Sam couldn't answer for a minute due to her surprise at the question and started fighting off the pain that Jack even asked. "What?"

"Sorry," he whispered, closing his eyes. "I shouldn't have asked that." Because he knew she wouldn't, and if he was wrong, she wouldn't admit it, so he should have kept his damn mouth shut. "I didn't sleep last night, was up watching Cedric. My head's not working right." He reached out blindly for her hand. "I'm sorry, Sam."

"Why would you ask? What's going on?" Sam demanded, keeping her voice low, just above a whisper.

He couldn't tell her, couldn't tip his hand, in case everything he believed was wrong. So he lied. "Ever since Sunday, it's hard to remember what's right. Everything's messed up in here," he opened his eyes, meeting hers and tapped his forehead. "But I believe in you, more than in anyone else in the entire universe." He looked away, because if he was wrong about her, his world was going to fall apart. "Forgive me."

He was lying to her, but Sam couldn't tell about what. Something wasn't right. "Of course."

Which was the answer she'd give in either case. This was too hard. All he wanted to do was curl up and put his head in her lap, but he couldn't, not in class. Miserable, he sank low down in his chair and held tight to her hand. "Love you," he muttered, though it had a touch of desperation he hated hearing.

Sam squeezed his hand back in response, hearing the desperation, but not understanding its reason. "You too."

Jack nodded. He had to believe that, he refused to let his suspicions touch it. Glancing over at Sam, seeing the concern in her face, he decided he didn't care if he was wrong. He'd risk it. "I don't really feel up to discussing flying spaghetti monsters, if that's okay."

"I'm not sure anyone's up to discussing flying spaghetti monsters," Sam said dryly, "You going to take off?"

"No." He looked at the desk. "I want to stay with you," he said very quietly. "If that's okay."

Oh. "Yeah, that's fine."

He flashed her a tight smile. "Thanks."
