Ethics [Monday, April 2, 5th period]

"Today we talk about the ethics we encounter in relationships," Anakin began quietly. "Not just the easy questions like 'is it cheating if one of us is possessed?' but the ones that effect everyone--how much of the truth do you tell the person? What happens when one of you stops loving the other one? What happens when you reach an impasse on differences in religion or life goals? What do you do when circumstances beyond your control threaten to split you apart? What if there's too much old baggage to try again?"

He ran a hand through his hair, not looking at John or Molly assuming they're in class today. "Take it from me. Sometimes love isn't enough to make it work." He looked around the classroom. "Today we talk about the messy parts of love. Pick one of my questions and answer it the best way you can."

He leaned against his desk. "I'll be over here brooding listening to the discussion."

"You tell me. Sounds like you can't wait to get away from everything Winchester."

"I can't wait to get away from everything hunting-related. There's a difference," Sam replied.

"But that's Dad. That's me. That's what we've been raised to do, Sammy."

"No, that's what we've been trained to do because Dad's obsessed. But we don't have to hunt just because it's what we've always done."

"No, we hunt because it's important," Dean argued. "Because it saves people's lives. And because it's what we do."

"Could you sound any more like Dad?" Sam asked rhetorically. sounding slightly annoyed. "We hunt because it's what we do? We hunt because it's what we have to do, because Dad's never given us another choice."

"No because the demon that killed Mom didn't give us another choice," Dean shot back. "What -- you want us to just forget about that?"

"No, I don't," Sam said, very seriously. "But there's a difference between finding the thing that killed Mom, and the general hunting that we do."

"Sounds to me like you don't want to do either," Dean challenged.

Sam couldn't help but glare a little at Dean's tone. "Well, then your hearing must be wrong. If Dad finds the demon, I'm not going to back out on helping to waste it. That's too important."

"I might not be in the same place as you guys, no," Sam admitted. "But dude, we have phones. All you'll have to do is call me and I'll be there."

"Yeah, 'cept for all the time you won't be," Dean shot back, then got up and walked away.

"Dean!" Sam said, glaring at his brother's retreating figure, before sinking in his seat and sighing.
