Ethics [Monday, April 2, 5th period]

"Today we talk about the ethics we encounter in relationships," Anakin began quietly. "Not just the easy questions like 'is it cheating if one of us is possessed?' but the ones that effect everyone--how much of the truth do you tell the person? What happens when one of you stops loving the other one? What happens when you reach an impasse on differences in religion or life goals? What do you do when circumstances beyond your control threaten to split you apart? What if there's too much old baggage to try again?"

He ran a hand through his hair, not looking at John or Molly ~~assuming they're in class today~~. "Take it from me. Sometimes love isn't enough to make it work." He looked around the classroom. "Today we talk about the messy parts of love. Pick one of my questions and answer it the best way you can."

He leaned against his desk. "I'll be over here ~~brooding~~ listening to the discussion."

"No one said love was comfortable or easy," Dean replied. "Pretty much the opposite, I've found. I mean, not that I have a hell of a lot of experience, but if you throw in family too..."

Anakin nodded. "I just can't imagine Darth Vader getting a lot of dates," he said. "But if he went into a bar, introduced himself as Chad and left off the planet-killing parts of his resumé, he might've gotten somewhere."

"Yeah, but that wouldn't be love, would it? One night stands where you're not even using your real name are just about sex, not emotion." Dean was trying really hard not to picture Vader trolling a singles bar and trying out pickup lines because he didn't think snickering was appropriate during this discussion.

"It's about contact," Anakin insisted. "After the initial encounter, it can go either way. And soon Vader's got himself an entire fake backstory about working the day shift at some grocery store on Coruscant."

Try as he might, the snickering escapsed as Dean's imagination obligingly provided an image of Vader asking paper or plastic. "It still wouldn't be love though. Not for Vader -- he'd know that the other person isn't in love with him, but this dude named Chad who spends his days bagging groceries. Plus, there'd be all that added effort to remember what the lie was and to continue it. That's not as easy as you might think."

"Oh, I know it's not easy," Anakin said. "But maybe Vader was tired of being the all-angry, all-the-time planet-blowing up monster. Couldn't the lie be kind of...relaxing...for him?"

"Would it be though? Guarding everything he said and did to make sure nothing that remotely hinted at the planet blowing up day job slipped out?"

"Rather than having her know about it?" Anakin asked. "And having her look at him like he was a stranger? Love--however he got it--would be worth the price of that deception."

Someone was oversharing just a tad, yes.

"We're not talking about Vader here are we?" Dean asked. "Contemplating a cover story involving working in a grocery store are you?"

Anakin laughed.

It didn't sound all that real.

"Hardly," he said.

"And see, that's another reason why you shouldn't lie to make someone love you," Dean pointed out easily. "You're kinda lousy at it."

"I don't know about that," Anakin said. "I kept a marriage secret for years."

"Maybe it wasn't as much of a secret as you thought," dean suggested. "And they were just politely ignoring it."

Anakin shook his head vehemently. "They would've tossed me from the Order," he insisted.

Dean gave a half shrug. "Powers that be are always easier to lie to than those close to you."
