Forensic Science - March 28th 5th period

The classroom was dark when the students entered and Abby was standing by the rack of laptops she had handed out last week.

"We're going to be using these today to solve our crime." Abby said, loading a program on one and explaining how to do handwriting analysis. "Also, you're going to be looking for matching injuries in crime databases. When you're not sure what happened at a scene or you want to check and see if this fits the profile of different crimes, you can enter the information and look for a match."

"Today's crime scene is very cool. It's our first hanging!" Pulling the door open to the crime scene, Abby grinned excitedly and ushered the students into the room where Bel lay on the ground. "Police found our dead guy this morning swinging from the rafters. They cut him down but they aren't sure if he's a suicide or the victim of a homicide. It's up to you guys to decide what happened."

"Okay. This is freakin' me out. You're dead, then you're not dead. You're gone, now you're here. Dead. Again."

"I was dead," Bel said mildly. "I got better."

"Congrats on that, by the way. I spoke at your memorial," John said, as it that pissed him off that Bel came back.

"You did?" Bel said, surprised. "Thanks."

"And if you ever die again, you bastard, I'll kill you myself," he said angrily, not focusing on the classwork.

Bel blinked. "Er. You can try," he said. "Won't work though."

John made an effort to calm himself down. Deep breaths. Relaxing his fists back into hands.

"How--Y'know what? I don't wanna know. It's not like we were ever best buds. But you're a friggin' Koala and you deserve an apology for that fight in the cabins."

Bel shrugged. "I don't hold a grudge about it. Wasn't worth it. But thanks."

John's kinda deflated now. He didn't hold a grude?

He mentally shakes himself. "You, uh, ready to do this class thing?"

"Sure," Bel said, resuming dead body pose. "Ask away."

"Uh. Time of death. Fake death. This time."

"10:59 PM," Bel reported dutifully.

"Supposed cause of daeath? Any additional injuries? The hell were you thinking?"

"Suffocation," Bel said. "My fingers are broken and bloody, there are scratches on my neck, and there's a bump on the back of my head. And I was thinking I'd be a good student and volunteer to be the body for the class."

"Do the scratches match up to the rope? Consistent with hanging?"

"Yeah, it does kinda look like I was clawing at the rope," Bel said.

John twitched. "Um. Anything else I should know? Prints? DNA? Trace?"

"Note's over there," Bel said, pointing to a piece of paper nearby. It said "Goodbye cruel world" on it in rather girly handwriting.

"Dude? Tell me you didn't write this. Or that you were possessed by a chick or something. Is this--" he sniffs it "--scented paper?"

"Does that look like it could be my writing?" Bel said.

"Not unless you've turned all girly like Blair and Meatbag."

Bel rolled his eyes. "Hardly."

"Great. So. You died. Came back. Dead again, girly suicide note, clawing at the noose. Is life really that bad?" John surveys the rest of the room, looking for more clues.

"I happen to like my life," Bel grumbled.

"You should work on keeping it, then. Seriously. How the fuck've you been?"
