Library [03/20]

Sam didn't bother going to the Perk this morning, wanting to minimize the amount of time he spent out of hiding in town, and just headed straight for the library.

Luke walked into the library and gave Sam a small smile.

"I wanted to see how you were doing," he said quietly.

"Do you mean you want to come and yell at me in person, or are you honestly wondering how I'm doing?" Sam asked, frowning softly.

"Honestly wondering," Luke said, moving closer. "I figured you might be able to use a sounding board."

He had an idea that was what Jedi were supposed to be.

"Oh," Sam replied, letting his defenses drop a little. "I'm not sure if a sounding board will help."

Luke smiled. "I promise I won't yell. Does that?"

"Promise you won't hit either?" Sam asked, rubbing the spot on his head where Alanna had smacked him.

"I won't hit either," Luke recited dutifully.

Sam nodded, falling silent for a few more moments as he tried to think of where to start, before saying, "I didn't intend for this to turn into such a mess, you know."

Luke nodded as well, looking sympathetic. "I didn't think you did," he said. "Do you see how people might've taken your intentions the wrong way?"

"I do now," Sam admitted. "I assumed everyone would read through those files and see the same things that I saw."

"There are a lot of people with dangerous secrets at this school," Luke said. "When people are afraid, they lash out."

He didn't add "like you did," but the conclusion was there to be drawn.

"Yeah, but almost all of the people with dangerous secrets are...you know, good people at heart," Sam replied. "They keep asking me when I'm going to out them next and...that's not what I want to do, I swear."

"And you don't think Alec is a good person at heart?" Luke asked. "Really?"

Luke looked thoughtful. "And how about how he deals with your brother?" he asked. "Sometimes people just don't get along. It doesn't make them evil, necessarily."

"I don't know exactly how he deals with Dean. Partly because a lot of that falls into the 'I don't need to know about my brother's sex life' category," Sam explained. "I think he cares about Dean, but I'm not sure."

Luke nodded emphatically. "If the guy who's dating my sister is at all like the version who used to go here..." he made a face. "Let's just say I know way, way more about him than necessary."

"I don't think I knew you had a sister," Sam remarked. "But, okay, let's say you found out the guy she's dating was violent and dangerous. Wouldn't you try to break them up?"

"The guy she's dating is a wanted man in most of the galaxy," Luke said. "It doesn't make him the wrong choice for her." He shrugged. "And trying to force Leia to do anything is a sure way to make her jump in the opposite direction."

"That sounds a lot like Dean. I think he's even more attached to Alec now than he was before," Sam said sadly. "He told me if Alec leaves, he wants to go with him."

Luke hissed in a breath. "Do you think he was serious?"

Sam nodded solemnly. "I think he was. Dean cares about Alec a lot more than I realized."

"And apologizing is out of the question?"

"I can apologize to Dean, because I hurt him more than I ever intended," Sam said. "But he's not going to be happy unless I apologize to Alec, and I just can't do that."

"And an insincere apology is worse than saying nothing," Luke said, trying to come up a way out for Sam. "You've dug yourself quite a hole, my friend."
