Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You, Class Nine [Period 5, Thursday]

When the class came, they may have been somewhat surprised to see Ares surrounded by weetiny penguins outfitted with weetiny shields and spears, and waddling in weetiny formation. He held one particularly noisy penguin in one hand, scratching at its head as he whispered encouragingly to it.

"After last week's sudden attack of girl," he said once he finally noticed the class. "I feel that it's only fair for those of you more inclined towards the male of the species to have a similar level of eye-candy. So you're going to be watching a glorious tale of war, 100*3."

He waved the non-penguin holding hand at the class. "Go, have fun."

Steerpike smiled back. The penguin on his desk was trying to imitate the battle scenes in the movie.

Glancing at his penguin, she laughed softly. After this movie it might be said that she had a pack of weetiny penguins following her, ready to defend their right for freedom.

Steerpike's penguin's battling was very serious work, and it didn't seem to take kindly to Annette's giggling. When it started jabbing its ~~pencil~~ spear in her general direction, though, Steerpike plucked it up by the scruff of its neck and gave it a dark look and a shake of his head.

Annette covered her mouth to keep from laughing further, and glanced back down to see three of her penquin making mantles from the pack of pocket tissues they had taken out of her bag.

Steerpike got stabbed in the nose with the ~~pencil~~ spear.

She looked over just in time to see that. Annette gasped, "Oooh. That's got to hurt."

Steerpike calmly dropped the penguin. "A bit, yes."

"That's a bad one you got there." She said, raising her brows indicating the little fella with a jilt of her chin.

"I prefer to think he's merely . . . opinionated." The penguin, now on the floor, began menacing Steerpike's ankle.

She gave him a crooked grin, "If that makes you feel better." Annette's were currently running around on her desktop, all three holding a pencil or a pen, their tissue capes flapping.

"There should be such a thing as a Weetiny holiday."

"No class so that we might hide from the creatures?"

"Maybe." She said. "I think I might enjoy playing with them."

"I suppose they might be juggled. . . ."

Her eyes went a little round at that. "Steerpike. They cannot be juggled."

"Well, they're certainly the right size," Steerpike leaned down to pick up the penguin again and gave it a slight toss. "You'd have to be mindful of their movements. It'd be a challenge, certainly."

Annette felt the need to move over to Steerpike and whisper, "Steerpike, please do not toss or juggle the weetiny penguins. It's my birthday." There. that hopefully would hopefully work.

Steerpike ceased in tossing the penguin and gave Annette a confused, sidelong look. "It's your what?"

At least he stopped tossing the penguin. "It's my birthday." She didn't think he was really confused about a birthday, was he?

Right. She was one of the priveledged society. He forgot that, on occasion.

His face went blank as he pondered the penguin in his palm. "Ah. And this means I should do as you ask?"

Her smile faultered at the look on his face. Actually the blank, unassuming look on his face. "No, I was just hoping you might not keep tossing the penguin."

"Because it's the anniversary of your birth." Her class was showing. It certainly took long enough.

Well. It had been foolish of Steerpike to hope.

He managed not to squeeze the poor penguin in his palm like a stress ball, but it was a near thing.

"It's just another day, no big deal." What the heck? "Don't you celebrate your birthday, Steerpike?"

"No," he said simply. He had no desire to explain that only the Earl and his family stood on the formalities of celebrating such anniversaries. He set the penguin down on his desk.

That really surprised her. "Do you know when your birthday is?"

"Yes."
