Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You, Class Nine [Period 5, Thursday]

When the class came, they may have been somewhat surprised to see Ares surrounded by weetiny penguins outfitted with weetiny shields and spears, and waddling in weetiny formation. He held one particularly noisy penguin in one hand, scratching at its head as he whispered encouragingly to it.

"After last week's sudden attack of girl," he said once he finally noticed the class. "I feel that it's only fair for those of you more inclined towards the male of the species to have a similar level of eye-candy. So you're going to be watching a glorious tale of war, 100*3."

He waved the non-penguin holding hand at the class. "Go, have fun."

"No," he said simply. He had no desire to explain that only the Earl and his family stood on the formalities of celebrating such anniversaries. He set the penguin down on his desk.

That really surprised her. "Do you know when your birthday is?"

"Yes."

"...when?"

"April 18th."

"That's a little over a month away. I will remember so that if you like, I can throw a little birthday party for you."

"There is no reason to do so. You would be the only person in attendance."

"Fine. Be a baby."

Steerpike scoffed. "A baby? Please inform me of what way I am being a 'baby'."

"You're pouting. Sulking almost. And apparently I am not good enough for you."

That got a choking reaction from Steerpike. "You, not good enough for me?" Well, he supposed it might be a possibility. "Merely because I don't see a reason in making an event out of the day I happened to have been born?"

She nodded, pursing her lips. "Exactly. Can't someone want to do something nice for you without you looking...looking...like you want to smack them or something? Hmm?" It was her birthday dammit! Be happy! Everyone! Be happy!

"It amazes me how wonderful and happy the world must look to you, Annette," Steerpike sneered, his anger and frustration getting the best of him. "That you see past the numerous injustices and imbalances in the world without ever noticing them in your way. No. I do not celebrate my 'birthday'. Such things are for ignorant, opressive nobility, not for 'kitchen boys'."

Her eyes narrowed, "Are you calling me ignorant, Steerpike? I don't think you know me well enough to criticize me in such a debasing manner! You've no idea my thoughts on society, or of this world. Why is it you label me?"

"Because today is your 'birthday', you claim the priviledge of ordering around your fellow student. These 'birthdays' are nothing more than another tool of the established order to create gaps between the people based on nothing more than the circumstances of their arrival in this world, and I will not be a part of it ~~unless I get to be in charge of it~~. I believe in equality, Annette. And I will juggle these penguins if I damned well please to."

So saying, he scooped up three penguins and attempted to shove them into his pockets.

"I claim no such thing you fast talking...boy!" She was getting highly irritated here. "I have ordered no one to do anything for me today. Did you know I am a working girl now? That's right. I work at the post office. Your ideals of me, Steerpike are totally unfounded! Take them back! And just so you know, I too, believe in equality! So there!" She huffed.

"You will not!" Annette gasped amd proceeded to try and take the penguins from him before he could shove them anywhere.

He rolled his eyes and allowed her to do so. Wasn't like there weren't plenty more where that came from.

"You're so consumed by your culture, you don't even see it. You claim you're not ordering anyone around and yet here you are, telling me I can't juggle penguins. And, oh, my, the post office. That must be so trying for you, to lower yourself to that level. I believe this conversation is over now, Annette. I'll be certain to treat you with the respect someone in your position deserves, from now on."

He gave her a mocking bow and then started scooting his desk over away from her.

Not . . . the most dignified of retreats.

Annette? Was beyond being infuriated. How dare he? Didn't he understand the creatures were real? That juggling them could very well border on animal cruelty? They're tiny zoo things for crying out loud!

She threw her arms over her chest and pouted and could hardly pay attention to the lovely shirtlessness on the screen in front of her. No thanks to Mr. Highandmighty Pants over there!

He believed this conversation over? Hah! It was hardly over!

...maybe just for right now it was over. But it was over because she said it was over!

"I say it's over!" She said to him quickly then moved her desk even further away from the further that he moved his.

"Ha!" Didn't she realize she was only proving his point? So typical of one of her class. Fools, all of them.

But he'd show her, soon enough.

Oh yes. He'd show them all.
