Spy Tech, Class Nine (03/14)

Wednesday, March 14, Period One

Once the students were all assembled, M stood in front of her desk, the screen behind her projecting the current absence list. She surveyed the group before her, looking stern.

"Before we begin, I want to call attention to the names on the screen. I will need excuses for your absence by the end of the week. Written excuses are preferable, and ones that actually provide a legitimate reason for missing class would be ideal." Her expression suggested that she didn't expect to achieve that 'ideal'.

"Now, we will begin our lecture."

Then M did something rather unexpected.

She reached up, grabbed the skin of her neck beneath her collar, and pulled her face off.

Revealing Nadia Santos underneath.

"Right!" Nadia said brightly. "Today we're talking about masks. The technology behind the creation and maintenance of highly detailed and realistic latex masks, such as this one," she held up the M mask with a Home Shopping Network sort of flair, "has been greatly improved in the last several years. These masks are now light-weight, skin-tight, breathable, and comfortable, and most importantly, very realistic. Facial recognition software won't see through them without x-ray capabilities. The human eye doesn't stand a chance."

Nadia set down the mask and grinned. "They can even be layered." And she reached up for her collar.

And pulled off a second mask. The man beneath the mask smirked at the students, and moved behind the desk to produce a box, which he set up on M's desk and opened to reveal a high-tech-looking machine.

"This is the Facemaker. When an image such a photograph or video footage is fed into it, the Facemaker produces this highly realistic three-dimensional latex mask, just as 'Nadia' showed you. Since the material is breathable enough to be comfortable for long periods, and sturdy enough to stand up to physical exertion, it's a popular resource for our field agents. Coupled with the voice changer technology you've already studied, this is the most effective method of disguise we've developed to date."

The man stepped away from the machine. "Which should serve to remind you once again, that you can't always believe everything you see."

And then the man pulled off a third mask. Oh look. It's Marty.

"Your mission, which you have no choice but to accept, is to pair off with another student and create masks of each other," Marty instructed. "However one should always remember that just because you have a mask it doesn't mean you can pass yourself off as that person. It also takes a good deal of acting talent and mimicry to pass yourself off as your subject. So also take the time to get to know your partner and watch their habits. And before you have any questions I just have one more thing to add."

Marty reached up for his collar and...

Yes, removed one last mask, to reveal M’s face.

"Perhaps the cardinal rule in espionage, is to always have a healthy suspicion of what others are trying to pass off as the truth, and to keep in mind that your own senses can be fooled as well. A good spy knows this, and can use it to his advantage, in both the act of disguising himself and detecting it in others." She looked around the room. "Your homework assignment for is to use the masks you create in class today to convince one person outside of this class that you are in fact the person whose identity you duplicate today. So choose your partners wisely, and make certain that you know enough about them that you can successfully mimic their behavior and actions. I believe one of you already had some recent practice at this."

M looked at Annette. "We have a test next week, so you’ll have two weeks to complete this assignment. I then expect you to report back on your success or failure. And yes, I will know whether or not you’re telling me the truth."

[About the Assignment: Just to be sure that it’s clear – pair up with someone in the class, and essentially switch identities with them. You only need to convince one other person outside the class that you are in fact the person whose face you’re wearing. You can RP it or handwave it, just check OOCly with your “target” in advance to make sure you get the reaction you want from it. Keep it fun and angst-free too, please. And despite what M says, you can make completely inappropriate choices for your partner if you like. And many thanks to Nadia and Marty ~~and John Voight~~ for their help!]

Dick got up and sat next to Annette. "This means I'm going to have to wear girls clothes again, aren't I?"

She tugged a little on his pants so he could sit closer. They had to be all secretive like, didn't they?

"Definitely. And hey, do you think you have anything I can borrow?"

Dick slid his chair closer. Not that he minded. "Uh, yeah. I've got plenty of t-shirts. But I think there's one (http://www.vm-caps.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=27&pos=449) that's actually clean. I really should get on doing some laundry."

"I'm pretty sure when I pretend to be you I'm going to have to be sitting down or something...cause you're short."

"Great. And uh, I don't do laundry either. Mine goes to the cleaners. Miss Frost tried to teach us yesterday in Home Ec. Don't quite think I got the hang of it."

Annette glanced down at her notes for a second then cut her eyes at Dick, "You're going to pay for that."

"Oh man, I tried to do laundry a few weeks ago...everything that I owned that was once white is now pink." said Dick. "My brother got a good laugh out of that."

Dick grinned. "Hey, I'm just stating a fact.

"Well, it was a worthy laugh. Can't blame your brother there, Dick." Annette replied honestly, her eyes teasing.

"I'm not that short." Okay. She was short. "How am I supposed to wear your pants? You might as well lend me a pair of boxers."

"Hey, I have no problem lending you anything of mine." he said. "How am I supposed to fit in your clothes?"

"You are so sweet, Dick!" She said grinning. "...and I have no idea. You are taller, broader," she cast her eyes over him as best she could given that he was sitting right by her. "Built extremely well. This will require some thought. You might have to borrow my girly boxers and a tank top. Did you keep that bra? You'll have to use it, and stuff it." Annette couldn't help but snicker.

"Ah, having such an impressive, manly body has finally backfired on me!" he said, laughing. "No stuffed bra will make me look like a girl. Maybe I can try to trick Cally and Mac, then I could like lay in your bed and put covers over me or something."

Annette giggled and teased him, "If only we all could have such egotistical confidence."

"And oh yeah! You sleep in my bed and stay in my room, and I will stay in yours and trick Jim!"

"Well it's not unfounded. Built extremely well, you said it yourself." said Dick. "That's rule number one of being me."

"Cool! Jim totally deserves it after the Jello thing." he said. "I hope he falls for it."

"Yes, but I haven't had the pleasure of seeing you shirtless yet." She smirked.

"Yay! And I will try to boykissy him!"

"If you wanted to see me shirtless all you had to do was ask." he said, winking.

"You're going to try to boykissy my roommate?" asked Dick, quirking an eyebrow. "Well...I suppose he is attractive in that boy next door sort of way."

Annette stared at Dick. She stared for a good long minute. "You will remind me later to ask? If I need reminding? Which I doubt, but just in case."

Laughing lightly, she toyed with her pen, "Not good enough huh? You're right, maybe I can see if he wants to share a bed. Does Jim like boykissy?"

"If this wasn't a classroom I'd have my shirt off now." he said. And he would even if she didn't ask cause it was really freaking hot in here today.

"All I know about Jim is that he likes putting my stuff in Jello and that he likes to make goofy looking faces when I say something weird." he said, laughing. "He's a pretty cool dude though but I'm not sure if he's the boykissy type."

She raised a brow, "Really? Cool. Me too."

"Okay, I will have to remember to say weird stuff around him and hide my, or your, stuff a little better." She frowned. "Dick? I might need a swearshirt instead of a tee-shirt. And maybe I could add a few inches to my shoes somehow."

Well now Dick was going to have his shirt off as soon as possible if that was the case.

"Sure, I've got sweatshirts too. You can have one of my Neptune High sweatshirts, then people would really think you were me." he said. "Good thing we have two weeks to do this cause we probably should do it on the same day. That way we won't run into each other."

"Oh you are right! I didn't think about running into each other." She nodded and thought and chewed on the end of her pen.

"Maybe I should talk to Mac too, while I'm you. That would be totally cool."

Dick's looked considerably nervous about Annette talking to Mac as him. "Um, maybe you shouldn't talk to Mac. I get the feeling I annoy her."

"How's that?" Of course, Annette has spoken to Mac about Dick, but Dick didn't know that.

"Oh you know we're just not the same type of people. I'm all happy and she's all...not. And when we were in school some of my friends ~~and me~~ probably weren't so nice to her." he said. "And she's friends with Veronica, who's this chick that I've never gotten along with. So there's tension there."

"Yeah, it's probably best to avoid her." he said, trying to think of a better excuse than that. "And she'll probably be with Cally when I talk to her as you." Good one Casablancas. Good one.

"That wasn't very nice of your friends, Dick. And Mac has always been happy around me. Maybe she just doesn't like you because of your friends?" Annette offered, trying to be helpful if she could, cause she's nice like that.

"Hmm, well, you are right there. But who's Veronica? I think I should meet her, or see her while I'm you?" She grinned a little wickedly. "I wouldn't mind a little fisticuffs." Hee. Hee. Hee.

"That could be true." he said. It wasn't, but it could be in some alternate universe. "But I don't blame her for keeping away from me." And from me staying far away from her.

Dick laughed. "Veronica doesn't go to school here. Well...a older version of her used to but doesn't anymore. She's Cameron Mitchell's girlfriend and she usually keeps a taser on her. But if you think you can fight that, by all means."

"Hmm, well maybe I can catch her alone while I'm you and apologize for anything you could have done to bother her. Ever. She might appreciate that." She nodded, smiling.

"A taser? Uh. No. No thanks. I'll leave Veronica alone. As you. Uh. Being you sounds a little hard, Dick."

"She wouldn't believe you, but you could try." he said, grinning.

"Being me isn't hard. Just laugh a lot and when someone says big words look confused." he said. "Being you is hard. I have to act all cute and sweet and girly."
