Forensic Science - 3/14 - 5th Period

Abby was pouring over a notebook at a lab table when the students entered. "John, Parker, Zero, Will, Billy, Lana and Hermione all have perfect attendance. Lucas already talked to me about his absence. Everyone else should come see me and have a reason for their absences or a bribe for your teacher."

"Now, today we're going to be working on identifying bodies where there's not much left to the bodies." Abby turned on the overhead to show a skeleton. "Due to method of murder, you're not always able to find fingerprints or identify by facial features. Sometimes you need to use other methods to identify the victim."

Abby gave a lecture on how to identify skeletons and teeth, showing pictures and x rays. Opening the door to the crime scene, Abby grinned at the students. "Let's get to the fun part."

A half collapsed garage stood on a grassy lawn, one wall torn apart and laying in pieces of shrapnel along the ground. "This is the final resting place of two people. Early this morning a pipe bomb went off and destroyed this building and killed the two people inside of it. There wasn't a lot left, so it's up to you guys to find a way to identify the remains and match them up with a file in missing persons. Also, here's a hint, make sure the injuries to the bodies match the injuries consistent with an explosion."

Abby glared at the garage. "There'll be pieces of a skeleton that you'll have to find. The other "dead" body," Abby used finger quotes here. "Is being a big pain and refusing to wear my really nifty skeleton t-shirt. So just pretend Miley is all burned and exploded."

Miley is dead. It's funny how she keeps sneaking bites of cookies from a bag hidden under the piece of roof.

Lana went over to Miley and smiled at her. "Hey. So... time and cause of death? Injuries? And is there a particular way I'm supposed to ID you?"

"Hey." Miley smiled at Lana. "I kicked the bucket at seven AM and my injuries were multiple fractures, contusions and burns. Sadly enough my cause of death was a broken neck that was more like..." Miley put her hands around her neck and shook a little. "...than, you know...boom."

Pointing to a jar that held a set of dentures, Miley grinned. "You get teeth as a parting gift."

"Interesting," Lana said. "So, not caused by the explosion."

She took the jar of dentures and smiled at her again. "Thanks. So, having fun being dead? I see you brought your own snacks."

"I get to meet new people?" Miley looked around for Abby and then held out a cookie to Lana. "Want one?"

Mac crouched down next to Miley, uncapping her pen to take notes. "Hi," she greeted, pretty cheerfully considering she's talking to someone who's supposedly been blown up. "Care to tell me when it was you died?"

"Oh, I guess you were an early riser," Mac commented making a note of the time of death on her worksheet. Every little helped. "And you died... how?"

"Apparently the early bird gets exploded." Miley said. "I actually died of a broken neck that didn't happen in the explosion."

"I'm just not a skeleton t-shirt sort of girl." Miley said with a shrug.

"Okay." Billy said. "So, the usual questions. Time and cause of death?"

"I died at seven in the morning." Miley replied and pouted. "Sadly I did not die from the explosion but from someone breaking my neck. No blowing up for me."

"Hey... Miley?" Parker cocked her head as Miley snuck a cookie. "Yeah. Time of death? And what kind are those?"

"Yup, it's Miley. Hi!" Miley smiled and held up the box. "Seven AM and Samoas. There were girl scouts at the airport. Want one?"

"Sure. I should probably not eat corpse-food, but what the hell." Parker took a Samoa and noted down the time of death, snickering. "So, did you die of suffocation, explosion, rocks-fall-everyone-dies, or what? And where were you coming back from?"

"I promise I didn't get any of my dead-people germs on them." Miley giggled. "I died because someone broke my neck which is really sad because then I missed out on what looked like a very cool explosion."

"I was coming back from Cali. I went home to see my family for a couple of days."

"Hiya!" Rikku said, kneeling next to the fake-dead girl. "Time of death? Cause of death? Any other injuries you've got that we should know about? Nifty bits of evidence? Ooooh, can I have a cookie?"

"Wow, got it all out in one sentence, huh?" Miley laughed and held out the box of cookies. "Yes on the cookie. I died at seven in the morning and uh...what were the other questions?"

Rikku grinned. "Yum, cookies! Sorry, I talk fast. I get all excited and bounce. I'd make a bad dead person. Well, fake, anyway."

She scribbled down info. "Let's see, it was ... oh! Yeah. Any nifty injuries? Bits of evidence that are cool? And what exactly did you die from?" She waved vaguely. "I mean, it's from the explosion, but what exactly?"

"Whoa. That's probably gonna be gross, huh?"

"I'm sure you'd be a fine dead person." Miley said, not really sure if that was a compliment or not. "Actually, I didn't die from the explosion. My neck was broken beforehand."

"But my body got all messed up in the explosion. Broken bones, burns, bruises and bits of me got exploded all over the place. My teeth are in a jar over there for matching up with records."
