Forensic Science Fifth Period 3/7

In place of the overhead today there was a flat screen TV set up in the lab and Abby was busying talking to an older gentleman as the students entered.

"Hey everyone, this is Ducky." Abby waved towards the flatscreen. "Dr.Donald Mallard is the chief medical examiner for NCIS. He's British."

"Really, Abigail, you didn't even bring up my glory days at Eton."Ducky leaned closer to the screen. "I used to be quite the cricket-"

"It's an hour long class, Ducky." Abby smiled. Hopping up on the counter, she looked at the class. "Ducky's going to teach you the different ways to discover when people died. We've talked about temperature but that's just the normal way."

"Here at NCIS, we excel at the abnormal." Ducky said with a smile and cleared his throat. "Now, most TOD's can be determined by liver or rectal temperature. That's only an option for the recently deceased. The decomposed, the skeletons, the men and women who suffered, those poor souls don't avail themselves to simple thermometer checks. Once we happened upon a poor general who had fallen beneath the icy waters of a lake. Of course her temperature would indicate that she had been dead for a long period of time when in actuality, she had only perished hours earlier."

Abby pointed to the table in front of the lab. On the table were calculators, decomposition worksheets, food spoil data, insect diagrams and other forensic equipment. As Abby held up an item, Ducky explained how they were used.

"I understand that Abigail has prepared a crime scene for you in which the poor victim didn't perish immediately. In those cases you need to become more of a detective. You see, those with the badges aren't the only ones finding a killer. The medical examiner and the forensics technicians are an important cog in the wheel of justice."

"Damn straight." Abby said with a grin. "Does anyone have any questions for Ducky?"

After the questions, Abby pointed towards the door. "Now to the crime scene!" She opened the lab door onto the side of a hot summer road. The blacktop wavered with shimmers of heat and nearby was a bridge, a small tarp hanging from one side to protect the corpse from the elements.

"The police found Conner alive this morning. He lived just long enough to tell them that he was the victim of a hit and run by a red car." Abby looked over at the tarp. "Then he died. The police can't catch the killer without more to go on. That's where you come in."

"I think my spleen exploded," Conner replied -- and hey, she wouldn't be the first person to assume he's crazy. He's kind of used to that, truth be told, so he's not arguing the incredulous reaction to his choice of shoe-retying locales. "Okay, maybe it wasn't my spleen. I don't know what it looks like inside my chest cavity! I slept through bio! It was definitely internal injuries, though. Dude, it would suck if I died of a ruptured, like, patella."

See? He wasn't lying about sleeping through bio.

Mac resisted the temptation to ask him if he knew what his patella was. She did take a moment to look a litte grossed out at the mental image she now had of his exploding innards, though, before making a note of it on her sheet in slightly more academic terms.

"Because being dead in general, not a bad deal at all," she deadpanned, a slight smirk playing at the corners of her lips. "So, other than this internal bleeding of yours... any other specific injuries I should know about?"

"Well, my arm here's fractured in a seriously awesome kind of way." Conner wiggled the fingers of the hand that was attached to the arm propped up on the concrete block. "Gaping open wound and everything! It looks kind of chewed on, too. Ew."

"That is disgusting," Mac agreed with a brief incline of her head. Obviously not really understanding how a broken arm can be seen as awesome. It's fake, and she's still a little squicked by it.

She made another note on her paper, scanning over it briefly. "Anything else?" she asked. "Any significance to the milk? or... any extra stuff you remember?"

"Disgusting, and crawling with bugs." Conner was still way too chipper about that. He pulled up his shirt to show some impressive tire mark-shaped bruises across his stomach. Sadly, he added, "The milk's probably gone bad now, sitting out that long . . . but not long enough that I'd be the missing person on it, I guess. Oh, and my watch broke when I got run over."

Mac pulled a face as she leaned over to collect a sample. Bugs and wounds, not a nice mix. Conner really was a bit weird.

"Ohh-kay," she said slowly, putting her bugs into a pot and quickly making a couple more notes. "Any chance I could have the watch?" Mac asked. "And a get quick photo of the tire marks." For the comparison purposes and in the interest of her grade, of course. Not because she wants a photo of the not-dead guy's stomach.

"Oh, sure." Conner was more than happy to pose for a picture, although really under most circumstances this wasn't exactly what he'd consider a potential future publicity shot. "You want the milk carton too?"

Kira was probably right, and he had been hit in the head a few too many times.

Mac snapped a photo, and smiled briefly at Conner. "Ah, yeah, that'd probably be useful," she said collecting the carton up into a ziplocky bag with a slight wrinkle of her nose. It really wasn't the sweetest smelling evidence.

"Okay, I think that's it. Thanks, Dead Guy," Mac said as she stood again. "Been nice invesigating your demise."

"Happy to help," Conner replied -- if he was a little less cheerful by now, that was because lying on the pavement kind of put a crick in your back after a while. "Go get 'em! Just be nice to the red car for me, okay?"

Mac pressed her lips together in a smirk and gave him a quick nod. Red might not be her colour of choice, but he seems to have some sort of special affinity. "Sure, I'll be nice to it," she agreed.
