Forensic Science Fifth Period 3/7

In place of the overhead today there was a flat screen TV set up in the lab and Abby was busying talking to an older gentleman as the students entered.

	"Hey everyone, this is Ducky." Abby waved towards the flatscreen. "Dr.Donald Mallard is the chief medical examiner for NCIS. He's British."
	"Really, Abigail, you didn't even bring up my glory days at Eton."Ducky leaned closer to the screen. "I used to be quite the cricket-"
[Unknown site tag]	"It's an hour long class, Ducky." Abby smiled. Hopping up on the counter, she looked at the class. "Ducky's going to teach you the different ways to discover when people died. We've talked about temperature but that's just the normal way."
	"Here at NCIS, we excel at the abnormal." Ducky said with a smile and cleared his throat. "Now, most TOD's can be determined by liver or rectal temperature. That's only an option for the recently deceased.The decomposed, the skeletons, the men and women who suffered, those poor souls don't avail themselves to simple thermometer checks. Once we happened upon a poor general who had fallen beneath the icy waters of a lake. Of course her temperature would indicate that she had been dead for a long period of time when in actuality, she had only perished hours earlier."
	Abby pointed to the table in front of the lab. On the table were calculators, decomposition worksheets, food spoil data, insect diagrams and other forensic equipment. As Abby held up an item, Ducky explained how they were used.
	"I understand that Abigail has prepared a crime scene for you in which the poor victim didn't perish immediately. In those cases you need to become more of a detective. You see, those with the badges aren't the only ones finding a killer. The medical examiner and the forensics technicians are an important cog in the wheel of justice."
	"Damn straight." Abby said with a grin. "Does anyone have any questions for Ducky?"

After the questions, Abby pointed towards the door. "Now to the crime scene!" She opened the lab door onto the side of a hot summer road. The blacktop wavered with shimmers of heat and nearby was a bridge, a small tarp hanging from one side to protect the corpse from the elements.

"The police found Conner alive this morning. He lived just long enough to tell them that he was the victim of a hit and run by a red car." Abby looked over at the tarp. "Then he died. The police can't catch the killer without more to go on. That's where you come in."

Parker frowned, looking thoughtful. "How long is it before that temperature thing is no good for telling when someone died? A day or two, or longer?"

Lots of trash, tire tracks, pretty much everything you would expect to find under a bridge in the middle of the summer. There's also a carton of milk lying nearby Conner, as if it flew out of his hands when he was hit.

Mac meandered around the crime scene, collecting up any objects that stood out.

Eventually she got to the tire tracks, and settled down to make a copy of them.

Billy took pictures of the tire tracks, and bagged the carton of milk.

Rikku inspected the tire tracks and grabbed some of the trash. Also the milk.

Will took notes about what was at the crime scenes, and grabbed a couple of pieces of trash in evidence bags. Hey, there was a picture of a missing person on the back of it. Jennie Spring? It wasn't anyone Will recognized. Nothing looked too much out of the ordinary for a hit and run.

Conner is lying down on the pavement, his arm propped against a concrete block. It's pretty obvious that he was the victim of a crime, his shirt is torn and bloody and he's missing a shoe.

[ooc: Conner is not dead so normal playing rules apply. Please don't do anything to him without checking with the player first.]

And there was Conner. Under the circumstances, he looked like a pretty happy "dead" boy. Because hey, red car.

Test the tire tracks! Repair the watch! Smell the milk! Play with the bugs! Do something else to figure out when Conner was hit.

Parker started pouring the mold for the tire tracks very carefully, and then started swiveling around on the stool, waiting for them to set.

Lana began analyzing the information she'd collected, particularly the tire tracks.

Zero made a mold of the tire tracks and cross-referenced it with the tires from the suspected vehicles, then found out what was up with those bugs from the wound to make sure her timeframe was correct.

Lucas got a mold for the tire tracks and checked the evidence (ie: eaten flesh) from the bugs.

Will pointed at the man second from the left.

"It's that guy. He reached his mid-life crisis this week, and spent his family's entire savings on a hot new red sports car. His wife was furious and decided to leave him, so he spent all night drinking. He finally remembered that he needed to go to work today, but since he was wasted, he was driving way too fast, and ran down Conner on his way back from getting groceries." She shook her head. "What a way to wreck your life."

Lana presented the tire track evidence that proved the 2nd red car on the left was the vehicle that had killed Conner.

Zero pointed at the fourth car and driver in line. "The girl with the Jeep did it. It's always a Jeep in Power Rangers. Except for when it's a giant robot assault vehicle."
