Spy Tech, Class Eight (03/07)

Wednesday, March 7, Period One

Once the students are seated, M indicates the absence list projected on the wall, and then immediately moves on to the lecture.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
BARBARA GORDON (CLASS SEVEN)

LECTURE: "Today we'll begin our unit on disguise, by discussing two technologies used to create simple and subtle disguises. It's easy enough to wear a wig or colored contacts to make very basic changes to your appearance, but there are times when you need to be more convincing, when you need to be able to fool someone who's actively investigating your identity. Santos and Blank are passing around two items to each of you. The first is a fingerprint kit. Not for taking fingerprints, but for creating false ones. The kits will copy the fingerprint of someone else, and produce fine latex replicas that you wear over your own fingers. The fakes don't have a very long lifespan, but they're quite useful when you know you're going into a situation where you've got to maintain a false identity as another person.

"The second item is a voice changer. Just as the fingerprint kit copies someone else's fingerprints, this item copies a person's voice-print, and then alters your own voice to match it. Again, it isn't something you'd want to use long-term, but it can be very useful when you need an extremely convincing disguise, or for use in telephone communications."

CLASS ACTIVITY: "Today, I want you to use the remainder of the class period to practice with the fingerprint kit. Pair up and take the prints of one of your classmates and create fakes for yourself, and then use the fingerprint testing materials in the box on my desk to take and test latent fingerprints, so that you can demonstrate for yourselves how they work."

ASSIGNMENT: "Your assignment for next week is to take home one of the voice changers. Copy someone's voice, and then use the voice changer to disguise yourself as that person. I expect all of these to be returned next week, and if I find out that any of you have used the voice changer to cause trouble or to get someone else in trouble, you'll have detention and an F for the assignment. Next week, we'll meet in the Danger Shop."

[NOTE: Standard disclaimer for the assignment: please don't use it to cause undue mischief, and make certain you get OOC permission from the player before copying their voice.]

[ooc: Yeah, I said last week that they'd be meeting in the Danger Shop this week. I lied. Next week, totally meeting in the Danger Shop, though. Kindly wait for the OCD is finished. Class is in session!]

Ouch. That glare hurt.

"Well, uh, no?" She said timidly.

Then added quickly, "How about just the catalog?"

She didn't like that answer. She wanted to be able to go through a catalog and pick and choose what she wanted. Dangit.

"So what you are saying is that this stuff can't be bought? Anywhere?" She kind of avoided M's question.

"Oh, money is not a problem. And," Think think think "For research purposes of course. Did I mention that I like to study?"

Annette twisted her lips and nodded at that. It didn't appear that M was going to be helpful in Annette's endeavors at learning to be really great at sneakiness.

"I might go to college to become an espionage specialist secretive mission type person. You wouldn't wish to contribute to my personal goal by donating anything, would you?"

Her mouth sort of fell open, and she stared a moment before she thought to close it.

"I lie perfectly, I think. Go ahead, test me. I can lie so good it's amazing just how good I can lie."

That glower hurt too. Annette might have possibly averted her gaze to somewhere just past M's right shoulder.

But her eyes snapped back to hers at hearing what the heck was being said to her. "The rest of the week? And...uh, who? A boy, a girl?" Crap. Just what did I get myself into now? Oooh! But spyware! Yesss!

"Blair Sandburg?" Annette looked a little worried. "But, uh, I don't know him."

"No!" She said quickly, holding out her hand. "I can do it. I just have to-" Annette was flailing inside. "When does this start?"

She nodded and wondered how the heck she was supposed to pull this off. "All right. I will be the perfect Blair Sandburg. Um, how will you know if I did it or not?"

Okay that scared her a little bit. "Yes, ma'am. I won't disappoint you, I promise. So, I best get started on my research. Thank you, M." She might be a little unclear as to what she was thanking her for. After all, she has to wait to get her spy equipment.

"Yes, most likely I'll need it." She muttered under her breath as she made her way back to her desk.
