Home Ec [first period, Tuesday]

Today, it wasn't Emma Frost standing at the front of the room - it was a different, much more clothed and tired-looking blonde.

"Um, hi," she said with a nervous little wave. "My name's Hannelore Ellicott-Chatham. You can just call me Hannelore. Ms. Frost isn't feeling too swift, so she handwavey asked me to sub for her. Um. I've never done this before, so here's hoping I don't suck too badly."

"So, um," she continued, "she just left us a couple notes. We're going over cleaning and tidying and vacuuming and...." Hannelore gave a happy little sigh. "Okay, this is something I'm really good at. We're going to clean the classroom. There are vacuum cleaners, and just a few cleaning products in the back."

Hannelore pointed, where there was a plethora of vacuums, mops, Swiffers, sponges, and a seemingly-endless supply of cleaning fluids. Best not to ask how many of those came from Hannelore's apartment.

"All right, I brought you guys some stuff," she said, pulling out a huge box of HazMat suits and gasmasks. "I didn't bring all my supplies, but I don't want you guys to get sick!"

Not that they'd actually become ill cleaning the classroom.

"You can pick what you want to do. Oh, and this is Winslow," Hannelore said, pointing to an oversized iPod sitting on the desk. Winslow waved. "He's here to help me."

Hannelore kind of waved at the group. "Okay. Go. I'll be around and stuff if you need me." She then dug a set of suction cups out of her bag, strapped a belt equipped with several cleaning products around her waist, and climbed onto a table. Then with a little hop, she was on the ceiling, where she began to scrub.

[Wait for OCD, please]

"You need soul indicators," River said, "Whatever a soul is."

"Oooh, like little lights!" Dawn said happily, then asked, "You don't have souls where you're from?"

"I think that's a matter of philosophical debate," River replied. She honestly didn't know. "I'm not sure I know how to detect one."

"I don't either," Dawn admitted, wondering when they'd gone all philosophical, "and it's really hard, because I've known people who were way worse with a soul than Spike was without one." Like, for instance, Warren Mears.

She pushed the thought of him pulling the trigger of the gun that killed Tara and shot Buffy firmly to the back of her mind, but frowned a lot as she sprinkled dust into butterflies on the floor.

"Nothing to do with goodness then," River said, wincing a little at Dawn's memory. "Why is it important?"

"What, a soul?" Dawn frowned. This topic always bothered her a little, since she wasn't completely sure she had a soul of her own. "I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with god and redemption."

River blinked. "God exists?" She remembered having that conversation with Shepherd Book. He'd talked about faith in what you can't know, and that sounded quite different from this soul-business.

"I've never met him or her, but a lot of people believe that's true, even without complete proof. Redemption is partly religious, but it's also about making up for bad stuff you've done in the past," Dawn explained.

"Hm." River really wished she could put some faith in that, but she couldn't. "Too much bad stuff."

"You?" Dawn asked, surprised.

"Everyone, just more or less." River frowned, looking uncomfortable.

Dawn decided to let that go for now. "Buffy won't know, because she hasn't met me yet, but I almost shaved Mister Gordo bald once because she wouldn't take me to the movies. And then she almost shaved my head, but our mom broke it up."

Re: Clean something! [03/06]

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
River could see why shaving Mister Gordo would have upset Buffy. "Shaved head might have suited you," she replied, trying to be more cheerful.

Dawn stuck her tongue out at River. "It would suit you better." She was good at being a brat, and was willing to use it for whatever purpose was necessary.

River held out a strand of her hair. She actually liked it long. "No," she said. "But I could dye yours green."

River was a younger sister too, and new all about bratishness.

Dawn looked at her own hair. "Would it be permanent?"

Re: Clean something! [03/06]

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Semi-permanent," River said. "It will fade into an odd lime green."

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmmm." Last year, she would have done it just for the attention she would have gotten from everyone. But this year wasn't last year. "Maybe not."

River nodded, then raised an eyebrow. "Pink then?"

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," Dawn looked at the ends of her hair again. If it sucked, she could always get it cut off. "Or maybe blue? I can't decide."

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
"One side of each?" River suggested. "I'd help."

"See, now I'm thinking stripes," Dawn laughed, "but Sam would kill me. And probably Buffy."

Re: Clean something! [03/06]

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
River really didn't want to upset Buffy, but she liked the idea if stripes. "Killing is bad. But I'd help you," she offered again."

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"If I decide to do it, I'll definitely let you help," Dawn promised, "but what about you? Is there anything you want to do?"

Re: Clean something! [03/06]

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
River thought for a moment until coming to a conclusion. "No," she said.
