Ethics [Monday, March 5, 5th period]

When the students entered the Ethics class, there was no sign of their normal instructor.

Instead a young man with a livid scar down his right eye wearing a dark cloak was leaning against the desk.

He looked at each of the students. "I am Anakin Skywalker. I'll be the Ethics instructor for the remainder of the semester. Darth Vader is gone."

He rustled through some papers. "I understand he had put you into pairs to learn to exploit each other." His eyes narrowed. "I don't work that way. Instead, please tell me what you learned about your partner--if anything--and how you would overcome individual weaknesses in order to become a more cohesive team."

He pointed at a student at random. "We will begin with you."

Silly Anakin actually thought that there might not be any questions about the change in teachers.

"Oh, that...." Blair gaped for a moment. "That's horrible, man! What happened? Should we do something? Send a card?"

Anakin stared. "He destroyed trillions of lives and was on board a space station that was designed to kill planets. He doesn't get a card. The universe is a far better place without him."

Blair frowned. "He was also our teacher. Just because some of the stuff he did wasn't good doesn't mean that it's okay that he died."

Anakin ran his hand through his hair in agitation. "All of the stuff he did wasn't good. He terrorized a galaxy for longer than you've been alive. That's what made him evil, teacher or not. They are throwing parades at the news at home."

He began pacing. "Get your priorities straight. Vader doesn't need your pity or your sorrow. He chose that life and deserved everything he got. Including that ending."

"No, I don't believe you. Not everything he did was evil. How'd he become a teacher if he was this all evil guy? He taught us and he didn't kill us, even when I wrote a not so flattering article in the paper about him."

Blair blinked. "My priorities? Are you kidding me? Somebody died! Good, evil or hermit, he was a person. He had parents, friends...or coworkers maybe. Whether he chose that path or not, it's still sad that he died! We're supposed to be sad about people dying! Don't you have any respect for life?"

"He was here to try and turn one of your fellow students to the dark side," Anakin snapped back. "When the student said no, he chopped off his hand. He didn't kill you only because Principal Washburn forbade it and he had a mission to accomplish. If he'd been finished with it, nothing -- and I mean nothing -- would have stopped him from tearing this entire school down around your heads. He wasn't horribly misunderstood. He didn't have secret pain. He didn't have a mother who missed him. He was Sith and spent most of his life exterminating the Jedi, who stood for nothing more than justice, peace and freedom from fear."

His eyes were bright with unshed tears. "Mourn them. Don't waste your time on Vader."

Blair blinked a little. "Um...aren't you a Jedi yourself, Anakin? Don't you think that you're a little biased on this front? How do you know that Darth Vader didn't have a mom who missed him or secret pain?"

"It's not like I'm saying what he did was okay. I personally think the Jedi are awesome." Blair's hand moved to the place behind his ear where the braid used to be. "I'm sad that they died. But Vader was a person too. I'm sad that he died as well."

"Vader had been Jedi," Anakin snarled, eyes full of anger. "I knew him very, very well. Mourn him if you must. You'll be the only one."

With that, Anakin turned on his heel and moved to a different part of the classroom.
