Novice's Guide to Villains and Villainy - Week 7, Period 3 (Danger Shop)

The Danger Shop was an empty, windowless room when everyone came in. There were no chairs. In fact, there was nothing here at all except cream coloured walls, the students and Thursday and her cup of coffee.

"Welcome," Thursday said when the door to the Danger Shop closed. "How well do you know your classmates?" She gave them a moment to look around at the group assembled before continuing. "There is a traitor among us. Traitors, at least the ones that do their job well, are rarely suspected. They have an ulterior motive and work against the best interests of the group, but keep their motivations and actions concealed.

What's important to remember when dealing with a traitor in your midst is that you don't know who you can trust. All you can do is find out as much information as you can and decide who to trust. Sometimes that trust is based on fact. Sometimes it's based on pure instinct and requires a leap of faith.

Today's task is simple. Talk to as many people in this room as you can. Ask each other questions. Learn from their answers and from what they don't tell you. Learn to trust your own skills in deduction and in your intuition. If you can train it well, it will rarely fail you.

When you're done, come and tell me who you think the traitor is and why."

River leaned back on her chair. Discovering traitors was a piece of cake. Not as nice as the cake Pippi had made for her though.

"Hey River." Tori waved at her, smiling a bit. It was Friday and the cheerleading competition was tomorrow. She was a bit excited.

"I think it will be fun." Tori admitted, with a smile. She thought back to the assignment at hand and wondered who in their class could be a traitor. "I'm not sure I'll be good at discovering who our traitor is." She admitted, with a sheepish grin.

River shrugged. "I can read minds. That helps."

"That definitely helps." Tori nodded, in agreement. She wondered what it was like, to have an ability like that.

"You get used to it, but it frightens some people," River replied. "And some it doesn't frighten at all," she added.

Tori nodded and smiled. "I can see that happening." She thought about it for a moment. "I think it might've frightened me before coming here, but I'm not weirded out by it."

"Strange things happen around here." It might have been an obvious statement.

"Where are you from?" Asking people and letting them speak for themselves was often so much nicer than reading their minds.

Tori nodded, agreeing with her. "Oh yeah."

She smiled. "I'm from Blue Bay Harbor in California. You?"

"Osiris, different solar system, 500 years into the future." She grinned.

"Very nice." Tori smiled brightly. "It must be different from here."

"Spaceships, better technology, more Chinese speakers." River shrugged. "The planet was terraformed to resemble Earth."

"Hi Pippi," River replied. "How are you today?"

"I'm good!" she said, which was true.

"How are you?"

"Good." Which was also true, as long as she tried not to think about certain things. "Yesterday helped."

"Have I told you I have a spaceship?" River asked suddenly.

"I... Think you might have..." Pippi said thinking. "I'm not sure."

"Want to fly it sometime?" River asked. "I think I should learn how to pilot it properly. Would be a useful skill to know."

"Oh yes, it's been a while since I've flown anything... Much."

Images of Pippi on a small wooden airplane type thing with two other kids, images of Pippi in a hot air balloon with a basked with the same kids, same hot air ballon and kids only now there's a bed attached to the balloon, images of Pippi flapping her arms with the same two kids in a car up in the air and splashing down in a lake... Jumping off the cliff with Pip to escape the creepy shadows.

"That would be fun."

That last one is pushed down pretty quickly.

The images of Pippi and the two children made River smile, the one with the shadow not so much. "I'll be captain of a spaceship and you of a ship on the sea."
