Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class Seven [Period 5, Thursday]

The Danger Shop was set up to look like a weetiny peaceful Middle New Greecelandia Greek village. Ares looked disturbingly pleased as he addressed the class.

"Now," he said. "Barring for a moment idiot imposters who deserve to get erased from existence, most gods are true gods, that is, they were born gods, their parents were gods or titans, occasionally you'll have a half-god, usually with a divine father and a mortal mother, who will have their mortality taken away and be granted a place among the full gods, and, thankfully, very, very rarely you'll get a full mortal, who through often dangerous and underhand means will become a god."

"Why do I use the word thankfully? You may ask, after all, the power of the gods is the kind of thing many aspire to. I'm glad you asked." Ares clicked his fingers and a tall, armour-clad, blonde familiar to at least some of the class, woman appeared in a burst of flames. "Here is a very good reason why."

"This is Callisto," Ares continued without skipping a beat. "When she was mortal, she was a ruthless, merciless, psychopathic warrior. She slaughtered more than one village like this one down to last man, woman, and child. As you can tell, she had a lot of potential, my kinda gal. Then, through certain, unimportant to the discussion at hand, events she died, or rather was killed, and guess who didn't have the good sense to stay dead, which I can kind of admire. Unfortunately she didn't know when to stop, and eventually clawed her way to godhood."

"That was not a good thing. Imagine someone fueled by a hate so pure, so powerful, that it would last beyond death itself, a hate that had burned out any trace of compassion, of love, of joy, its owner ever possessed, until they became less than human, a mere vessel for that hatred. Unwilling to respect anything or anyone, to accept their place in the scheme of things. Now give them immortality and indescribable power, the power of the gods, the power to change the world. Scary thought isn't it. The kind of things that person might do."

"But why tell, when I can show," he said, grinning, "The aim of today's class is to survive. I'm giving you ten minutes to run and hide, then setting her loose. Thanks to the safety protocols, she can't really kill you, but if you get burninated you're sitting on the sidelines until she's done."

[ooc: OCD threads coming up.]

"But that's just because we're in this fake room!" Rikku clenched her fists. "Someone has to stop her. If she's doing all those things you say. Someone has to try."

"You just said she was a fake one. Like Yevon was. That means something, right?"

"It's not - I'm not being noble! You can't just go, oh, it's someone else's problem, let's send someone else to fix it, let them die, not me, or you're no better than they are." She shook her head, frustrated. "Never mind."

Okay, now she was just confused. "But ... does that mean Yevon wasn't a god? He had his own religion and everything. And people said he couldn't be killed, either, but that wasn't true at all. I mean, it couldn't have been, 'cause we killed him."

"Wow, I guess." She shrugged. "How are you supposed to know? If someone's really a god or not?"

Kawalsky coughed into his hand when Ares said 'you can't kill them' and the cough sounded a lot like 'bullshit'.

Well, since he had detention to round off the week, he didn't see the point in stopping there. "Sir, are those sideburns compensating for something?"

"Sure." After his week, Kawalsky just had no sense.

Kawalsky put his hands on his hips and waited to see if Ares would go through with it. What? He was in the Air Force for a long time. It wasn't like he hadn't seen naked guys before.

"So when you say you're a god, and gods can't be killed, does that also mean that gods can't lose appendages to jealous other guys' girlfriends who own swords?"

It was worth asking.

"You ever tested that theory out?"

"No. Making you aware of the risk you're taking. But if you're cool with losing Senor Sideburns Junior, go right ahead."

Kawalsky shrugged and looked as as nonchalant as he could. "Taking your time. One word for you: velcro."

"Ahhh," Kawalsky said, nodding at what he saw. "God. Got it." He walked off to sit back down with the other burninated people.
