Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class Seven [Period 5, Thursday]

The Danger Shop was set up to look like a weetiny peaceful Middle New Greecelandia Greek village. Ares looked disturbingly pleased as he addressed the class.

"Now," he said. "Barring for a moment idiot imposters who deserve to get erased from existence, most gods are true gods, that is, they were born gods, their parents were gods or titans, occasionally you'll have a half-god, usually with a divine father and a mortal mother, who will have their mortality taken away and be granted a place among the full gods, and, thankfully, very, very rarely you'll get a full mortal, who through often dangerous and underhand means will become a god."

"Why do I use the word thankfully? You may ask, after all, the power of the gods is the kind of thing many aspire to. I'm glad you asked." Ares clicked his fingers and a tall, armour-clad, blonde familiar to at least some of the class, woman appeared in a burst of flames. "Here is a very good reason why."

"This is Callisto," Ares continued without skipping a beat. "When she was mortal, she was a ruthless, merciless, psychopathic warrior. She slaughtered more than one village like this one down to last man, woman, and child. As you can tell, she had a lot of potential, my kinda gal. Then, through certain, unimportant to the discussion at hand, events she died, or rather was killed, and guess who didn't have the good sense to stay dead, which I can kind of admire. Unfortunately she didn't know when to stop, and eventually clawed her way to godhood."

"That was not a good thing. Imagine someone fueled by a hate so pure, so powerful, that it would last beyond death itself, a hate that had burned out any trace of compassion, of love, of joy, its owner ever possessed, until they became less than human, a mere vessel for that hatred. Unwilling to respect anything or anyone, to accept their place in the scheme of things. Now give them immortality and indescribable power, the power of the gods, the power to change the world. Scary thought isn't it. The kind of things that person might do."

"But why tell, when I can show," he said, grinning, "The aim of today's class is to survive. I'm giving you ten minutes to run and hide, then setting her loose. Thanks to the safety protocols, she can't really kill you, but if you get burninated you're sitting on the sidelines until she's done."

Annette kind of just sat there, and boggled. Like big time.

While Hermione knows someone named Callisto used to go here, she's never met her. So she just takes notes and listens to everyone else.

Steerpike was so busy being struck by the idea that one could actually claw one's way to godhood that he couldn't really be bothered with being worried about any of the rest of Ares' lecture thingy.

He had hate, oh yes, he had plenty of hate. Apparently, he needed to be more ruthless, though. Hmm.

Yeah, Molly was going to stick with boggling, thank you.

"Dude," Anders mumbled, staring at Ares. "Cal? No way. No frakking . . ."

He trailed off. He wasn't so sure.

Krycek looked kind of thoughtful, but didn't seem overly upset.

Valentine was added to the list of those who were boggling. Probably not for the same reason.
It was possible for mortals to become Gods?
.... Something to strive for someday, perhaps.

Rory was in on the boggling, yes. Especially after her conversation with Liz last week.

Sam boggled a little bit, but it was hardly the first time one of her friends ended up claiming to be a god.

Bridge wasn't quite sure why he was here today. To see what kind of class the little god-kid he'd met on the weekend would teach, maybe. But he's here, standing in the back, and his expression going darker and darker as class goes on.

lalala this was always in the right spot

Whatever embarassment Evie had been feeling about having told the God of War a bedtime story was now drowned in dismay. "Oh, not really. That's not at all fair."

A mortal becoming a god - doing terrible things - no conscience left - things were starting to fall into place for Rikku. That's why Ares called Yevon a false god? And this woman was just like him.

She walked over to Ares and lifted her chin. "How are we supposed to defeat her? If she can't kill us, we can't kill her, either. We can't stop her."
