Revolutions: Week 7, Period 5

Aly looked just a little gleeful as she waited for students to arrive in the Danger Room.  Actually  substitute very for just a little and that's where she was.  If she was embarrassed about the weekend, it wasn't showing.  Once everyone arrived, she spoke up.

"Inside this," she said, holding up a small clay globe, "is blazebalm.  It's an explosive made with magic from my world.  Once the blazebalm touches oxygen, it ignites.  It's quite a bit stronger than C4 for those of you who want to make the comparison."  She turned and threw the globe far away from the group of students.  When it hit the ground, it exploded in a flash of fire and light.

She turned back to the students.  "I thought about giving a midterm today, but doing the first of our two classes on explosives sounded a lot more interesting to me."  Aly grinned.  "Hopefully it will be for you too.  Normally when you learn about explosives, you have quite a few lessons on theory, safety, and chemistry before you even get to think about touching actual material.  We, however, have the Danger Room so you'll be able to play experiment a bit today."

"I know quite a few of you already have explosives experience," she glanced at if they were present Charlie, Sam, Tyler, Aeryn.  "If that's the case, a lot of this is going to be review for you, and I apologise.  If you'd like something a little more difficult, I'm sure we can arrange it.  For now, if you could keep an eye out for those who are less experienced."

"We're going to deal with improvised devices today, and two in particular, but first you do need to know a bit about the theory,"  Aly gave a concise but throrough lecture on explosive materials and the science behind them.  When she was done, she didn't quite say 'now that that's out of the way,' but she was obviously more interested in the practical aspects of making things go boom.

"The two explosives we're going to work with today are two improvised explosives.  You don't always have access to military material and you definitely don't always need it.  One of the most common explosives in this word - and also one of the easiest to make is anfo - fertiliser and fuel oil.  It sounds simple but a just a ton or so in a the right place could blow up a cargo ship and the harbor it's sitting in.  The other is less an explosive than a weapon.  Molotov cocktails - half gasoline, and half motor oil - you've probably already heard of them if your from this world.  They're easy to make and can do a lot of damage especially against gasoline engines or wood structures."

"There's hundreds of other kinds of improvised explosives and we're going to talk more about tactics in another few weeks.  What I want you to do today is to make anfo into a bomb and also make the Molotov cocktails.  After you have them ready, you can blow things up."

[OOC:  Please wait for the OCD is up.  All links go to wikipedia so the FBI shouldn't break down your doors.  More explanation in the OCD threads.  If for any reason, your character is upset by the whole 'blowing things up' plan have him or her talk to Aly to let her know or ping me OOC.]

Zuko? Not so much in need of a molotov cocktail. It's been a while since he got permission to make things go boom however so he's using the opportunity to show off.

Alec was cool with watching - explosions were neat, he just didn't feel the need to make them himself.

Well, Aly had asked to see what he could do.

Balthier stood a distance away from a pile of automobiles in a battle stance. He held a had to his forehead concentrating as the air around him seemed to shimmer and glow. After a moment Balthier flung his arm towards the pile, the glow disappeared and the cars blew sky high.

Rather spectacularly, he thought.

"Trifling matter really," Baltheir responded as he brushed off his shirt. "Just takes the time to earn the experience and the money to purchase the magic."

D lit then took aim with one of her pipe bombs and threw it rather viciously at one of the structures.

Wash, rinse, repeat, until she was nearly out of explosives.

Irulan took her finished bomb and lit it before throwing it to a wall but it ended up rolling to the car, which was a wee bit closer to her than was safe.

Frantic, Irulan ran away. Thankfully when the molotove shattered and made with the fire, she was very far away. Next time, she'll definitely delegate the bomb lobbing.

Just to keep her hand in, Sam established a perimeter with the anfo bombs, lit the fuses, and watched a couple of cinderblock walls explode to the rhythm of "Shave and a Haircut."

It was all a matter of timing, really.

"Old trick," Sam grinned. "Also, blowing things up makes me feel better. How about you? All recovered?"

"That puts you one up on Kawalsky," Sam rolled her eyes.

"You forgot grease and caffeine," Sam laughed. Not that her diet was much better.

"Your parents definitely did their job properly," Sam teased, feeling more comfortable since apparently she was going to have a relationship with Aly above and beyond student/teacher at some point in the future, and she had her suspicions about what that was. "Nice job with the lesson, by the way. Very thorough."

"I can't say I've ever regretted my explosives knowledge either," Sam shrugged, "but I've found it more useful on other planets. They get grumpy here if you throw grenades on campus."

"Ah. Forget I said anything, then," she tried to look innocent.

"Knowledge is never a bad thing. You have more options and can make a more informed decision and better choices if you have more information."

"Sorry, I'll climb down off the soapbox now," Sam said sheepishly.
